Nikon 2 x converter III and 300mm 2.8

And shutter speed - which then affects ISO requirements, which then affects noise, which then affects IQ etc etc etc.

Basically, we're all doomed!

unless you have Nikon :p

Or the Zuiko 300/2.8, which doesn't need much stopping down to get very sharp pictures with a 2x TC!!

I've had decent shots at pretty long focal lengths and slow shutter speeds (e.g. 1/30s with 700mm equiv) - the key was remote cable release, mirror lock-up and a steady tripod...

An oft overlooked issue with TCs is that kit with the longer focal length needs to be steadier to get a sharp shot. So the quality of the tripod and head as well as use of mirror lock-up becomes more important.

your correct thats the problem i am having holding steady which is where the skill and strength come in

There comes a point where hand-holding just won't do (granted, some of us are built like gorillas!). I use a gimbal arm for panning shots rather than a conventional tripod head. It takes a bit of getting used to - a rather different movement than panning hand-held.

Kev - I assume you use the combo with your D3. It's FF isn't it so if you used it on the D300 you would have even longer reach isn't that correct? Sorry for the silly question. merv:thinking::thinking:

I did Merv and you are correct. It would give you an effective reach of 900mm.

A couple more at 600mm for you Merv.

Iv been looking to get a TC for a little while, the longest lens i have is the 70-200 but want to get up to the Loop at some point, i thought the X2 would have been the best one to get, but im thinking about plumping for the 1.7 for the IQ..

I will be watching this thread with much interest!!

For the best IQ, you should stick to a 1.4x Kenko or Nikkor TC.

The 1.7x is OK on the 70-200 VR, but not really any better than the 70-300 VR once it has a 1.7x.

I'm back now Andy. If you have a copy of the old 2 x converter ready to compare against my new one, we can sort something out.

OK, my 300mm f/2.8 should be coming back from cleaning next week (don't know why I bothered, its been away ages)

I also have a Kenko 1.4x, Nikkor 1.7x TCE-II, and Nikkor 2.0x TCE-II

Plus also a 105mm VR and 300mm f/4 AF-S lens to throw into the mix.

Ok. Just pm me when you're ready. ;)

another vote here for the "watching with great interest". I'm seriously thinking about getting the new 70-200VRII and adding the new X2TC to it, but am rather worried how much it'll effect IQ. Will be very interesting (as I already have one) to see how things fair with the Kenko 1.4TC too

C'mon guys! were all waiting with baited breath!! is it any good?? :D

when there is a lot of light i use the tcx2
not so much light i use the tc 1.4

i am photographing birds and now try to use f8 all the time as thats supposed to be about the best part of most lens

I don't think Andy is ready for it yet.
Waiting for the pm to tell me to send it. :) Not that I'm in a hurry to part with it. :D

Great shots Kev, I'm aiming at the other end of the spectrum, ordering a 28-70mm F2.8 and a 17-40mm F4 :)

Thanks Jamie. They are back May 25th, so we'll have to meet up again. ;)
