Could someone who has the kit lens please post a photo of the thread where the filter screws on? I want to see how it compares to mine cos there is no thread at the top for a filter to screw onto!

Never seen one without a filter thread! 18-55 VR is 52mm. It's a female thread BTW - ie the end of the lens has an internal thread.

My kit lens is the same as that......never seen one without a filter thread!

Really! Then can you explain how I've managed to get a filter attached to the front of this lens? Go on - have a guess.

I'll give you clue ... I haven't used any glue.

My mistake - could have sworn it didn't. Does the Canon kit lens have a thread?
 
This is the thread on my kit lens, it's the first version. The thread doesn't start from the top but further down and my filter won't screw onto it just sits on the top. I'm away ATM so can only use my phone for the photos!

This is the thread on my 35 and 55-200 lens. The thread starts from the top on both of these so the filter can screw on.

Does the thread look right on the kit lens?

Just to add on the kit lens there is no starting point for the thread like my other lenses.

I'm not sure, I bought it just over 4 years ago now. So you think this doesn't look right and it should have the thread starting from the top?

Thanks for the link but I would probably put the money towards something better than the kit one. I could live without using a filter on it but it would've been nice if it did fit.
 
I haven't got a lens to check now, but I've owned Five (!) kit lenses in the past and never had a problem fitting a filter to any of them. You could try gently screwing the filter on anti-clockwise before turning it the correct way.

I've been in touch with Nikon and they advised that I send it off to them to be inspected. They will then give me a repair quote but if I decline it I have to pay a £14 admin charge. Unless they offer to do it for free cos it's a manufacturing fault (they won't say if they will) I might be better off just leaving it given how much a new one costs. Apparently it would have just been covered by a 12 month warranty, which has long expired.
