An 18-300 DX lens would probably serve really well as a higher-end kit lens on a less budget-oriented DX body too. Maybe we'll see a D400 with 2 kit options (18-105 and 18-300). 18-300 would be a better differentiated 'more pricey' kit lens than the alternate atm for the d300S (where it's 18-105 for the 'cheap' kit, and 18-200 for the pricier kit)

They could probably cover the entire price gap between where the D300S is now, to where the D800 is sitting.

MTF charts look darn impressive for a "kit" lens of this kind of zoom range. If the price isn't too high, this could replace my 18-105mm and 70-300mm on my D90.
