Nikon 18-200 VR

is this the best way to get this range, or are there better ways to do it.

Ive noticed tamron do an 18-250, but no image stabilistation.

Is this the way to go, or am i best sticking with a 2 lens system, like an 18-70 and 70-300

Anyone got any others they want to throw into the equation, and opinions on them would be great.

For convenience the 18-200mm vr is great, however because of the long focal range it can be soft at certain points, if you want good sharp photos throughout the range the 3 lens option is your best bet, IE 12-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-300mm, but of course you have the trade off of having to keep swapping lenses, unless of course you buy 3 cameras

Or 12-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm and then the 200-400mm!
I'm still pondering on the 24-70mm as i have the 18-200mm and its just a great holiday/walkabout lens....
I do hear though that the 24-70 is a superb lens....

You really need to define "best".

A 2 lens system will generally give you better image quality. But you might miss some shots beause you've got the wrong lens on. And you need to carry around the spare one all the time.

A superzoom will generally have some points in its range where the image quality is not so high. But it's convenient and portable, and you're always prepared.

What's important for you?

I usually have the Sigma 18-200 on my Canon 350D because I value portability and preparedness. (But as you'll see from my signature i have a couple of more specialised lenses for times when I know I'll need them.) My brother-in-law has the Sigma 18-200 OS and I have to say it feels more well-built, as well as being a bit better optically according to the reviews.

I'd say it's the best walkabout lens because of VR and it's versatile focal length. IQ wise I'd say it's pretty damn good. I've yet to suffer any issues, and the lens creep doesn't bother me.

In bright days it's a lot easier to use this than my 70-200 for motorsport as I only need circa f/8. It's also very light, as well! It's lighter than my 18-50 f2.8!
