I'm about a week away from dropping my cold cash on a new camera/lens combo. I'm torn between the Canon 30D and the Nikon D200 and am in the middle of shopping around for camera/lens combos and prices.

I just came across a D200 with a 18-200mm lens that sounds really impressive. I can get this combo for about $2,600 which is significantly more expensive than the 30D with a 28-135mm lens at $1,500 which I'm also looking at.

I could of course go with a body only purchase for the 30D and have a decent amount of money for a seperate lens. I like the idea of a single lens with such a useful zoom range and was wondering if you guys had:-

a) any experience with the Nikor lens above
b) would by a seperate lens/camera package
c) what equivalent zoom lens is there for the Canon

You're so decisive Gaz! :D

You can check out the whole Canon and Nikon lens range HERE

I suspect your prices will be better though on your side of the pond. ;)

The price for the d200 and 18-200mm sounds about right (£1200-1300). But the 30D and lens sound rather cheap, and especially with the canon rebate at the moment, its defiantly the preferred brand. You might also want to consider the D80 with a 28-70mm f/2.8 which can be had for around $2300-2400.

Ha, yeah I know. I swear, this crap's giving me indegestion!

I'm not so concerned about the prices I spec'd at the moment. For instance, I just found the same D200/lens combo on another store for $2,150.

I was more interested in folk's view of the Nikon lens. I see Sigma have an offering for the Canon but it seems rather cheap looking. :suspect:

Hi - If you only want one lens then the 18-200mm is a great one but I found it lacked real quality at the 18mm & 200mm ends & reverted to three lenses (12-24 35-70 70-300)

Thanks Paul, CT PM'd me last night and told me the same. Looks like I'm going with the seperate lenses as you guys recomended.

I've got a D200 and a 18-200VR lens with it. All I can say is that it's a great combination and the lens is quite forgiving for a newbie, like myself, stepping up into the SLR world. Of course the lens has a very impressive zoom range but the only downside being that it's a little slow at the far end. I'm sure you can check out the reviews for the f/stop vs focal length data.

On the whole, if you have the bucks for the combination then you won't be disappointed. I pushed myself to go for the D200 over the D80 and am very happy with it

I have the 18-200 VR and am very happy with it as a travel and walkaround lens. If it's something a bit different, then I use the 70-200VR or the 35-70 F2.8. THe 35-70 can be found dead cheap on ebay for an F2.8 lens, and they are superbly sharp.

Good info guys, thanks! I'm finding myself going from the Nikon to Canon camp and back again. I love both systems and it's a tough call.

I think I'm going to go with a few guys recomendations of splitting up the lenses to achieve that focal length. I don't dare touch that Nikon zoom though or I'll be back on the fence again! :bang: LOL

Here's what I'm planning to get so far...

Canon BGE2 Battery Grip.....$ 169.95
Canon 30D Body Only.........$1120.95
Canon 17-40mm f/4L Lens...$ 679.95
Canon 580EX Speedlite.......$ 399.95

Total:.............................$2370,80

The prices aren't carved in stone and I'm trying to find a better deal right now. The lens I spec'd out is on the short side for my immediate needs but I know it's one of the lenses I should get so I'll just pick another up later after my wife get's over the initial shock! :bat:

I need to stop researching though 'cos I keep changing my mind!

Well I think you made a good choice. OK you'll be a bit limited to start with, but that 17-40L produces sharp images with beautiful colour saturation, and it's a very useful walk round lens - you can get down to extreme close ups with it.
