Yes
I was in Digital Depot, Stevenage this morning and tried the above lens on my D200. Pure vanilla and I want it NOW! I also tried a couple of the fast Sigma zooms and they were not in the same league, both had really noisy AF which was also much slower and they hunted terribly, even though the light was not bad.

That Nikon lens is deffo going to be the next major purchase this year. :shake:

did you try a Sigma 24-70 f2.8?

Yes I did and as I said it was noisy and hunted terribly, just wasn't for me.

b****r was eyeing up Sigma zoom lenses on the net earlier :(

I was seriously considering them as well but they were worlds apart from the Nikon and whilst I could probably live withit there would always be that ickle voice in my head whispering "My precious" :D

The reason why they have noisy focus is the fact they are driven by the cameras motor. They dont have HSM. Think it might be liscencing issue. But to be honest it isnt a huge loss as the focus s still extremely quick (18-50 f2.8 EX DC Macro). AS far as noise goes, it isnt as bad as it is made out to be. Certainly quieter than a nifty fifty!

Plus it is comparing a £1000 lens with a £260 lens

Hacker - fab lens that - I take it you dont mind carrying such a heavyweight lens around? - I tried a 28-70mm recently & it is rightly known as "The Beast" (weighs nearly 2lbs ) - I'd need to do a special "neck wrist & arm workout" (steady now :naughty:) to be able to use those Pro lenses (maybe its my age & my failing muscles!)
Paul ;)
btw didn't Arkady have one for sale or was that the 17-35mm

When I was shooting with Nikon the 17-55 never came off my camera.......well worth the money imo

Just got a Sigma 10-20, focusing great, quiet and accurate, sharp and a lot cheaper 289 including postage. Love it already....

Thats becasue it has the HSM design. Sigma's standard zooms like the 28-70, 18-50 etc do not have this. Hence the slightly noisy auto focus which is also a tad slower than the AFS and HSM lenses.

Here is a quick test shot from yesterday taken inside the shop with the 17-55mm, 1/60th f/2.8 ISO 400.
