looking at this atm as my gear doesnt get the use it should, i've only really had 3 days out in the past 3 months with the camera and am wondering what the difference between these two lenses would be with a massive price difference

I am thinking the Nikon 17-55 is alot of money to let sit around and get little use, maybe it will get more once i am out and about during the coming months who knows

anyone used both and can do a quick comparison?

thanks

I've never used the Nikon you mention, but the Tamron I had for some time and loved it BIG time. I only sold it when I got the Nikon 24 - 70 AF-S (which I've now also sold).

Image quality, bokeh and sharpness were outstanding from the Tamron.

thats whats making me wonder, i hear loads of great things about the tamron and was wondering if its worth having the Nikon sitting around when i could have the Tamron pplus another few area's covered

I did have both and I did compare them, and I think the compassion is somewhere online.

Short version - save your money :)

User biases aside - Both Thom Hogan and Photozine both say that the 17-50 is really just as good as the 17-55 as well.

Optically the Tamron is pretty decent, as everybody says. The build quality isn't a patch on the Nikon though. If it saw very heavy use, then I'd suggest the Nikon would stand up to it better. But for occasional use, the Tamron will do you just as well.

I agree - its the build quality that stands apart, but the Tamron is certainly up to much more than occasional use.

Given the price difference, you could actually buy a spare Tamron anyhow and still have plenty left over from premimum you pay for build of the Nikon.

Yeah i know that, i have the Nikon version now but was wondering if its worth selling for the Tamron

I have both and optically they are very close (apart from wide open). I never use my tamron anymore as it does not have the feel and responsiveness of the Nikon which is a joy to use.

I find the tamron is far slower to focus and hunts a lot more.
