Anyone got any experience with this lens I was about to buy a Sigma 18-50 2.8 and now I've seen this!!!! so going to delay buying for a day or so to research the Nikon lens.
Thanks

Nikon best DX lens? Possibly. They pulled out all the stops.

There are two Nikon DX lenses worth considering if image quality is paramount.

The 16-85 VR and the 17-55 f/2.8 DX (oh, and the 10.5 fish is very nice too)

Consider if you need f/2.8 though, for low light its much more useful, the 16-85 VR is at f/5.6 at 50mm.

Sorry for the necro-post.... but has anyone else got an opinion on the 16-85?

Am considering this to go with my new D300 to be used for general walk about and some motorsport pitlane/paddock static shots.

Anyone got any example images, perhaps something taken at both ends of the focal range, including some 100% crops? Sorry to ask so much!

I use it as my walk around lens, would not be without it.
See thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=81707

Sorry they are not 100% crops and at either end of the range but I offer them as a quickie look.

I have just scanned my database of shots using this lens and I cannot find any taken at extreme ends of the zoom range where subject matter is in focus all over the frame - sorry again.

I find it really strange nobody is commenting on this thread...

I can only assume not many of you own this lens?

Is it too expensive for what it is then?

Actually, I'll bet I know the answer, there is some sort of similar Sigma, and you've all bought that one instead and its only 180 quid, not 430 quid...

I suspect it's a case of not many people owning this lens. It was only announced earlier this year if I remember correctly.
It's not a lens I would consider for myself because of the f5.6 maximum appature.

Aha!

I have found a proper review... dunno why I didn't spot this before:

http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/46-nikon--nikkor-aps-c/377-nikkor_1685_3556vr

Having read that it appears to be one of those lens which isn't good enough to demand a serious pro price tag, yet is too expensive for what it is...

Hmmm I shall have to have a rethink on this one I think... maybe the Nikon 17-55

Haha spent too long typing that reply methinks :D

Ta!

The thing looks sharp enough and not too much distortion but the bokeh looks pretty horrible.

At the wide end I wanted to use this for some arty detail shots in pitlanes and garages etc and I think this is going to be pretty blurgh for that :(

The other end I was just going to use for a walkabout holiday snap type lens, the performance there is less important to me to be honest, this really was to try and get a wide'ish angle and a walkabout in one piece of glass, which as always seems to mean a compromise that I'm not too happy with and definitely not at the 400 quid mark.

Will probably buy a cheap kit 18-70 (or whatever) and get a Sigma 10-22 for the arty stuff, as I know that is a reasonable UW for what I want.
