Nikon 16-85mm DX VRII problem?

Anyone owners of this particular lens about?

When focusing, mine can only be described as 'dry' and 'scratchy' sounding. It really does sound rough and most unlike any of my other 3 Nikon lenses.

Shortly after first noticing this noise the zoom broke, so I sent the lens off to be repaired. I've now got the lens back with new zoom key and guide set fitted, but it's still sound rough whilst focusing. Obviously, I've got concerns that all is not well.

Is this just a characteristic of this particular lens and it is just noisier than others, or does it seem like there is an underlying problem?

The repairs are happy to take the lens back for another look (with an accompanying cost no doubt), but I'd rather not waste either mine or their time if the problem is all in my head :thinking:

Nope, it focus perfectly. There's no visible shake, stutter or any dragging of the mechanism.

It's all nice and smooth in fact. It just sounds like the mechanism is low on lube
 
I have heard of this problem before, have a trawl through dpreview nikon lens forum. Fortunately for me, mine is OK.
 
The 16-85 is one of my noisier lenses, mines more of a squeaky noise than anything :shrug:
 
DonnaM - cheers for the pointer. I've had a look on dpreview, and although I can't find anything specific to my problem, there are plenty of links to reviews for this lens... and they all mention the quietness of the auto focusing :thinking:

I think I'll get mine looked at again :(


Ghost - "squeaky" would be another word for it.. it's a dry squeak though

Mine started to squeak and then a few months later the VR failed. Fortunately it was still under warrantee at the time. Although it was never as sharp when it came back from Nikon.
 
Mine doesn't squeak or feel rough in anyway, it's only a few months old though
