Who has one? Who's had one?

I'm sorely tempted to trade in my superb 80-200 2.8 for the 135, but the DC aspect puts me off a tad. Is it easy to get your head around if shooting on the move? Is it as good for portraits as I hope it is?

As much as I love my zoom and it really is fantastic for portraits, I tend not to go too much above 135 anyway and I have the 85 1.4 too. I just fancy a slightly longer prime and don't need to go as far as the 200mm end.

Feedback on this lens would be appreciated.

I've used the 135mm DC and it's amazing. People who don't know how to use it get put off when they try it for the first few times, getting your head around the DC controls can be a head throb, but as far as shooting on the fly goes, like at a wedding, it's fine, just keep it set at 0 at you don't apply any defocus either way.

Hire one for a week, shoot the **** out of it, you will love it and buy one :)

I'd stick with the 85mm 1.4 and maybe get rid of the 80-200 and get the 70-200 VR II. Or if you like primes the newer 85G or 35G?

Great stuff, cheers

I don't really want/need the extra focal length, to be honest I'm becoming more geared up to shooting with primes, the only reason I'm not going all out on that front though is because the 24-70 is just too good to part with. The newer 85 doesn't have anything to really warrant the extra few hundred pounds so I'm happy with the AF-D. As for the 35, I have the f/2 and the 1.4 does tempt me, but so does the X100 although that's a whole different topic altogether!

Recently got one and have to say it's a sexy lens. Can't help feeling the 105mm DC would have been more appropriate though as at 135 you are too distant from your subject IMO (weddings). Might see if anyone fancies a swapsy in the classifieds................

sparkoss, that really is a great photograph. did you add in the orange glow in post, btw?

either way, inspirational work. i hope you've got that on your wall somewhere!

I ditched all my Nikon kit for a Leica M9, so I do understand the desire for a change of direction. If I were you and in the market for an X100 I'd certainly have a look at one, it does produce some lovely images. For me if you didn't already have the 85 I'd say get the 135, but the 85 is an absolute cream machine anyway so the 135 may be a bit redundant.

yes, i got one recently. took this with it, the results are stunning.
the DC thing is a pointless gimmick in my opinion. doesnt make much difference.
fantastic lens!

That's my old lens, it is a lovely piece of glass even with the DC set to 0. The DC can be subtle, but I found it useful in certain situations. There's a good thread on Nikoncafe about it and the 105 DC.

I think I want one, but I'm not sure what it will offer that my 85mm f1.4 dosen't already have.

Basicly I think it would only be useful when I can't get close enough to my subject. but I what the 180mm for that, so I haven't bought one because I can't justify it to myself!

(still want one though!) :)
