Hello,
I'm a novice at this photography mallarkey and quite happy messing with my D7000 and 18-105 kit lens for the time being. It doesn't stop me window shopping though:naughty:. My question is, why would anyone buy a Nikon 12-24 over a 10-24 lens? The spec appears to my untrained eye to be similar and for the shorter focal range you pay a couple of hundred quid more. What am i missing?
Thanks
Jonny

Hi Jonny....the 12-24 is f4 throughout the range where as the 10-24 is f3.5-4.5...

I have used the 12-24 which is very nice but never used the 10-24 however there are some that prefer the later...

Should have said that the 12-24 is supposed to be the better built lens...semi pro standard where as the 10-24 appears to be consumer grade..

I've only used the 12-24 and it's a nice lens but... I'd really urge you to take a look at the Tokina 11-16 if you're looking for an ultra wide lens on a crop. It really is a quite brilliant lens.

ahh gad-westy don't go tempting me! I am finding it hard enough to resist buying a new lens as it is. I am determined to understand what i am doing first before I start buying new lenses!

Apologies for silly question, is there any significance to the quality of having f4 straight through rather than f3.5 -4.5?

Very good advice Graham...

In this particular example, it's barely worth worrying about as the difference is so small and actually the variable aperture lens has a wider maximum aperture. In general, wider aperture is nice to have, all else being equal.

I have a 10-24 and use it on my D90. Its a cracking lens and has taken some fantastic photos!!

For me, the extra 2mm at the wide was everything!

Ive had both for work on a D200 (property photography)

The 12-24 is a better lens i thought, sharper beeter AF less distrortion. Ive got the 10-24 now and i wouldnt swap it cos that extra 2mm makes quite a difference.

Neither come close to touching my own Canon 10-22 though which is in a different league for distortion and sharpness
