Just been looking at the Nikon V1 at my local LCE store and it certainly has a quality feel to it. The rear LCD seemed very good quality and the colour EVF was far better than any EVF I have seen before.
They did not seem to have the 10mm prime based kit, only the zoom based kit
but they hope to have the prime kit in soon.
I've downloaded some sample NEFS and the quality seems pretty good and it has the advantage that I can use ViewNX2 instead of things like Silkypix (which comes with Lumix m43 cams for example).
I'm not sure why so many people say they "don't like it" before even actually seeing it for real.

You don't need to see it to know it's not aimed at enthusiast DSLR users. I'm sure it does what it does very well, but has nothing I want.

I work at the Nottingham branch of the London Camera Exchange.
We had our Nikon J1 and V1 arrive on the 20th, we also received a 10mm prime lens for them.
Having had a few hours to experiment with the V1 I found it to work extremely well. The video mode on the slow motion mode was amazing. I recorded a short 5 second clip at 1200 FPS, it then played back at 24FPS. It was very interesting seeing different things at such a slow rate of motion.
The 10mm is very small, though I was surprised of the size of the V1 body. I'm really looking forward to trying it out with the nikon lens converter and my other nikon lenses.
It's a bit expensive at the moment, but depending on how it works with my other Nikon lenses, it definitely seems like something I'd use if it was in my camera bag.
One other good feature was the Photo digest function (may be called something else along those lines). It basically continually records in this mode and then when you take a photo - it save a few seconds before and after it was taken. You can then watch a replay of all the action around the photos you took on that mode in a compiled video for the day.

Interesting to see someone have something positive to say about the J1/V1 even though I doubt I would have any use for video on a camera (although some people undoubtedly will).
Is it possible to test (on the V1 in particular) if it is possible to manually focus it. I have tried a friend's GF2 and manual focus is not good as even though the 14mm pancake has a focus ring, there is no focus distance scale and the "virtual" focus scale on the LCD does not have any distance markings, just a dumb picture of a mountain at one end and a dumb picture of a flower at the other end
Another thing, how well does the Program AE mode work? On the GF2 it is VERY buggy as the aperture basically seems "stick" on f/2.5 even when shooting outdoors in daylight. I would have expected perhaps f/5.6 in bright cloud and f/8 in sunny conditions (at least that's what my D700 seems to choose (well actually f/8 & f/11 as it defaults to iso200 not iso100 like the GF2))
