Nikon 1 Series (V1/ V2/ J1 etc) owners thread....

Thanks for the input,i should get the adapter today so hopefully a trial later.

When using the FT1 adapter do you need good light?
I have found using the camera indoors with the FT1 and 70-300mm VR it needs to be manually focused first before AF works kicks in. If the lens is set to close focus or infinity then the shutter release half depressed nothing happens at all? The 10-30mm works perfectly.

Only been out with the 55-300 on a totally grey overcast day,it was a pain to focus on occasion so i would say you do need good light.

I updated the FT1 to the latest firmware and it improved things quite a bit. Also found that the 70-300mm VR had more success with the camera set to continuous AF.

Interesting i will look into the firmware versions after some more testing,i dont trust nikon and there updates my sigma 105 macro works great and i dont want an update that stops it.

The flare round the sun is a bit odd, though that may be the cloud it's shining through... nevertheless, that is a cracking shot!

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum but was happy to find a thread on the Nikon 1 series. My wife bought me a J1 a few years back now and though I enjoy it I want to get more out of it. I only have the 10-30 lens for it and whilst it's been good to me for what I've needed I want to get into photographing aircraft more.

I've been looking at getting the ft1 adapter, but before I jump headlong into it I want to get your suggestions on lenses which would be suitable. Also, where is best to buy equipment? Although I've us we d this camera a lot I've never bought anything for it.

Sorry for the long post, I look forward to your replies :)

I used the Nikon lens with an FT1,the only thing i found was AF could be slow or impossible it all depend on the lens you use :)

Thanks for the reply- as I'm looking at shooting aircraft (figuratively speaking), what lenses would you suggest?

30-110 is a good choice as it will allow full af capabilities. Ft1 only gives you single point and for fast moving anything you will struggle, even with continuous single point. Otherwise I have tried ft1 and 55-300 and ft1 and 70-200mk1 and both are ok, though I only aimed at the moon ;-). 30-110 is also pretty reasonably priced for trying out first. Mpb has them fairly regularly

30-110mm is a good option but if you're determined to go down the path of an FT1 adapter then an excellent combination is the 70-300mm f4-f5.6 Nikkor zoom (not the cheaper one!). Never found focussing speed to be a problem myself.

I've found it works really well on all focal lengths/apertures except 300 f5.6 - come to f8 and everything is superb again. I'll see if I can find some sample shots. Might even be some in this thread :)

Go back to page 8.... some good test shots at various focal lengths and lenses by Dac.

Hello, been a V1 owner for a couple of years now and whilst I really like the camera I find it very difficult to shoot photographs of my model gliders. Trying to follow the aeroplane is fine, as is focusing. I find there is a tiny delay while the EVF shows you the last picture even in continuous shutter mode. This makes following the model very difficult. I wonder if I am not using the correct settings or technique, I have given up trying to get model photo's with the V1 and returned to my Olympus E520. Any advice would be very welcome, I have included a shot of the sort of picture I am taking.

Exposure Mode Shutter Priority
Single shot
Shutter Type M
Metering Matrix
ISO a400
Focus Auto Area
Lens 30-110
Iso was 200 F5.6 1000th/sec

what lens, Roger and what are your settings ...... exposure mode and focus mode

shutter or aperture priority?

auto ISO or what?

hopefully you will get comments and advice on this thread

I have had a V1 since they first came out, I have never find any way of disabling the preview "feature" -:(
The V2 had a firmware update that enabled the preview to be disabled, sadly no such firmware update was forthcoming for the V1.

Thank you Cyclops, it really spoils what is a really nice camera for what I need, but the fact that the V2 can have the "feature" removed gives me food for thought.

I have been investigating the V2 and reading the manual, I cant find any mention of turning off the "preview" would this be because it was done as a firmware update and the manual has not been updated please?

Roger

Bought my V2 at Christmas and you can turn the preview of on it,not got the camera to hand and cant remember how, like you i didnt want to see the picture i had taken but the next one to take.

Thank you Mike that is good news for me, it looks like a V2 will do the job I hoped the V1 would. I think I will start looking for a V2 body I was going to go for a Fujifilm X-20 because of the optical viewfinder but a V2 means I can keep my lenses.

Still plugging away with the V1 but it has developed a annoying fault, occasionally the screen does not come back on after using the viewfinder. I imagine there must be a sensor and it could need cleaning. Can anyone help please?

Thanks Roger

The sensor is right beside the viewfinder - sometimes a thumb or camera strap obscures it and switches off the screen in deference to the viewfinder. It's an option you can change in the menus.

Thank you, just given it a good clean and appears to be fine now.

Any of you chaps got the Nikon 1 70-300VR lens ?

I am getting fed up with carting a 400mm 2.8 and tripod for wildlife and was thinking that this lens would be ideal for an easily portable solution. I have used my 300mm 2.8 with the FT1 adaptor and have had really good results with the combo, but it only allows the use of the center focus point. It's also still heavy to cart around.

I know you ask for first hand experience which i dont have but have you seen this.

Thanks Mike that's a very good review and has just about pushed me over the edge to purchasing one. I spent a day at Bempton Cliffs the other week and took a 200-400 f4 and tripod I also stuck the V1 with 30-110 lens in the bag. I got some very good pictures with that combo but was knackered from carting it about.
I had a stop at the cafe for refreshments and then wondered off with the V1, it was just nice to
feel so unencumbered and the Gannet shots were great off it.

Always carry my v2 with me when I go out after wildlife. I normally use a D810 with a 500mm and 1.4TC if required. The V2 does give some extra reach in extreme situations :) I only use if I can securely mount / rest the lens though.

Just bought a used 300 F4 - it's a backup for the 500 in case it goes wonky while on one of my trips away. I think it will also make a good lens for the V2 :)

Dave.

Guys - I have an apology to make. I seem to have swapped my J1 for a full frame, so for now at least I will be watching this thread from afar. Until then... have fun!

Hopefully going to Bempton week after next,i know what you mean the thought of the 150-600 makes me knackered before i go :( its just the cost when i dont know how i will like it that stops me jumping for that lens.
