Nikon today updated its 18-55mm 'kit' lens to include Vibration Reduction (VR). The lens also features a Silent Wave Motor aka AF-S, Super Integrated Coating and hybrid aspherical elements in its design. The optical design is 11 elements in 8 groups - slightly more complicated that its predecessors' formulae to allow for the VR system. Despite the extra features the lens is set to hit the shelves for around US $199 (£179.99 / €270.00) and will eventually filter down to be bundled with DSLRs. More after the click.

I really wish Nikon would stop with these pointless little marketing moves. Just because they made a D3 they think they can give up making anything decent again. :p

We need some f/4 prospec lenses Nikon!!!!!!!!

Is there really any need for VR/IS on a wide-angle?

Up the ISO and use f/5.6.

This isnt a wide angle lens. It is a 27-85~ 35mm equivalent. Canon have a 17-55 IS f2.8. Is that pointless too? Oh, dont forget the Sigma 18-200 OS, is the OS pointless at 18mm?

VR, IS or OS is a feature, you dont have to use it. VR has saved my skin numerous times, especially t the wide angle.

King.

Um, why would i want to do that? Nikon need to create a line of pro spec F/4 lenses to compete with Canon's line up. Especially a 70-200mm f/4 VR, i want better optics and quality than what the 70-300 offers, but i can't afford the 70-200 f/2.8 VR. Also theres a huge gap inbetween the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 and the 24-70 f/2.8. A 24-70 f/4, would be excellent, and would mean i wouldn't have to run to sigma.

Basically, yeah. Unless of course you are shooting wide angle low light photography. Don't forget, the canon version isn't a kit lens like the nikon 18-55.

The OS is for 70mm+

I agree :)
