Yes
Can someone who uses a 300mm F4D AF-S IF ED Nikkor with a Nikkor TC 17E II
please confirm they are fully compatible (i.e. autofocus functions OK).

I have checked Parks and Warehouse Express websites and their info relates to the non AF-S version of the 300mm f4 Nikkor. The advise that manual focus is required, but they make no mention of AF-S version compatibility.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Martyn,

Can you confirm that you can get autofocus to function correctly.

The Nikon chart indicates that it does not:-

Extract from chart

1909 AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED Autofocus not possible

Yes it does, I use single centre point.

It also says that it will not work with the 200-400, and it does, and also the 500, and it does ... :D

Those charts are old, and do not take into account the improved focus engines of the latest bodies.

Evidence ... 300AF S + 1.7TC ... both are ISO3200 so it was not the best of light, the subject and background are similar tones, and there are plenty of twigs etc to distract the focus, but it nailed it

I also use the rear focus button, which I think helps in these situations

Having looked at the CHART on the Nikon site, it does say 1$ (Perfectly Matched) and 5$ (No Auto Focus). Where other lenses simply have the 1$ or the 5$ signs in the boxes.

Everywhere you read about the 1.7TC it does say they work well with Auto Focus. The same posters also say the 2.0TC will not work with Auto Focus.

Very confusing.

We must have been typing at the same time, thanks for the post Martyn.

Martyn, do you use the 1.4TC as well or just rely on the 1.7TC? The reason I ask is I have a 1.4 on back order from W/E but they have the 1.7 in stock.

I use the 1.4 most of the time on my 500 and 200-400, as this gives me f5.6, which is more useful when the light is not too good.

The 1.7 gives f6.7 and is helpful when I need more range, it gives better results on the primes, but is acceptable on the zoom. As the light is improving now winter is over I may start using the 1.7 more on the 500, however trying to locate a small songbird in amongst branches with an 850mm lens does provide a different challenge :D

The 2.0TC will make the f4 lenses f8 which is probably why AF will not work, personally I would not use one on any of my longer glass.

I too find that both the 1.4TC and the 1.7TC will autofocus perfectly satisfactorily with the 500 F4 although I agree with Martyn that it does take a bit of practice to find the subject. I do find that the 1.7TC does slow down the autofocus noticeably but it usualy succeeds in locking on.

Thanks, Martyn, Ken & FiestaRed.

I actually emailed Nikon UK with the query and they got back in an hour, but simply quoted the extract from the lens chart.

I am convinced enough to buy a 1.7 TC.

No probs here with 1.4 or 1.7

The 1.7x works fine... and I mine really fine... see my post from last weekends British Superbike if you want to see that it doesn't slow focus down enough to be a problem with 140mph+ motorbikes!
