Nikkor makro/micro AF-S VR 105mm F/2.8 Lens opinions please!!??

I've been offered this lens second hand and wanted peoples opinions as I'm new to the macro side of things!

I'm not an expert but I think it's supposed to be one of the best lenses you can get for macro on a Nikon. Read (possibly on here) that it's slightly too long for macro on a crop sensor though.

The longer the focal length the greater the working distance, never heard it said that it is too long for macro on a crop sensor before.

Great lens optically, sharp as a tack, nice as a short telephoto as well.
