I have a nikon 55-300mm 4.5-5.6 and Im really not happy with the quality of the images Im getting. So Ive been looking at the 80-200mm 2.8 D AF ED, I know its old but what is the image quailty like? Im using a D300.
Ive seen that the Sigma 70-200mm os seems good but its abit out of my range, so is the 80-200 a good lens for detailed images? Id be mainly using it on bird photography.

I have a 80-200 and im happy wit it.... i paid £450 from a guy who had enough on ebay! and this is on a d300s :)

So the image quality is good on it then?

Nikon 80-200 f2.8 D AF ED is a great lens

Ye i does me.... Just make sure you buy a clean 1 and well loved!! :)

The 80-200 optically is a superb lens. Bit slower a.f than tge newer versions but if you can live with that its an excellent choice.

Would you be able to use a 2x converter on this lens?

There are three different versions of this lens:

AF-D single-ring push-pull version with no tripod foot
AF-D dual-ring version
AF-S very fast focusing - best for shooting action

While they all optically same (excellent). I personally don't like the original push-pull version as I strongly prefer zooming ring. Handling aspect of the second gen. is much better. For moving birds the AF-S version is significantly better than the other ones, but it is also much more expensive.

If you are interested in birding photography you might soon find the reach the 200 as very limiting though. You will be only using the lens at 200mm. Therefore it is better to consider AF-S 300 f/4D. For very similar You will get very fast focusing, extra reach and magnification.
