So, the new version has been announced. Interested to see the reviews when they come out. They don't make any specific mention of focus breathing being sorted but would assume so. Cost is as expected, a tad high but it's a must for most working pros. For a keen amateur it may be costly, but an investment?

They got this thing called SPORT VR. Not too sure how it will work.

presumably it will be (much) smaller, (shorter) and lighter in weight?

Nikon rumors (I think it was there where I read it anyway ;)) state that focus breathing has been eliminated. Guess we'll have to wait and see though ;)

No! Only 100g lighter, actually a few mm longer but 2mm narrower. So hardly anything in it.

Plus they have swapped the zoom and the focus rings over. No big deal, but if you are swapping between the 24-70 and 70-200 you might find yourself grabbing the wrong one every so often.

Knew I'd seen it somewhere :D

I'm interested to see it, but it's going to have to bring some good features to jump to it from a VRII.

I'm still shooting with the 70-200 VR1. I'm happy with the lens atm, unless the lens break and unrepairable otherwise I won't consider this one.

For me this update is a bit underwhelming, for all the new materials and fluorite elements its 1.5mm wider, 3mm shorter and 110g lighter. Considering its still 1430g I don't think I would notice the 110g saving. The price isn't as bad as I thought it would be but nearly £2700 for the new 70-200 when you can get a great condition used vr2 for about £1100 for me it's a no brainer. it's unlikely to have an impact on the used price the VR2, I can't see any reason why they would drop especially with the exchange rate it is.

They are quoting "consistently superior resolution, all the way to the edges of the frame, and throughout the zoom range", but it doesn't say how superior and I'm guessing it will only be marginal. AF has been improved, especially in tracking, and VR has been improved too. Along with it not focus breathing I'm sure these benefits will sway the pros, but for us mere impoverished folk I'm sure the cost to upgrade won't be justified ;)

Going back to the focus breathing, I would imaging this has sometimes worked in my favour when shooting sports, such as runners. For example, when I've been shooting the London Marathon the runners don't notice you until the last minute which is when they'll wave etc, but they're already very close. If I had the full 200mm rather than 135mm they'd have been too big in the frame and only got their head in shot :ROFLMAO:

Every Nikon lens in this focal length from the old 80-200 onwards has been the best in its class for its day. It's only natural that they would want that to continue hence the new lens.

I will be getting one :)

Great news, hopefully will see prices of used VR2 models start to drop.......
With the recent price rise due to the poor exchange rate I doubt we see much price drop on the second hand VR2's with the new one currently being £2675 release price. The VR2 currently goes for around £1000-1100 second hand, I've even seen some for £950. If the updated version had been £1700 release price we may have seen second hand vr2s drop to £700-800. But I think second hand prices are going to stay quite static. If the exchange rate stays poor for a 1-2 years I think we will generally be seeing a shift towards more expensive gear prices, especially as all new updated lenses have much more than the last.

_8109005.jpg Bought mine at Greys of Westminster last week. V sharp, had no issues with a x2 teleconverter. Focus ring position takes a little while for the brain to rewire. VR was v good on old version already. So far, so good.
