I hope that you will be able to give some advice.

I have the above lens in excellent condition,it is the AI mount and made towards the end of the production run around 1981.

The lens as been used only a couple of times over the last year and when cleaning it yesterday I noticed it had developed a creak on the focus ring. The creak seems to be intermittent and not always in the same focus area.

What would you think the cause of this may be and is there a fix?

Thank you.

Huh an excellent lens only used twice a year, anyway could be a tiny bit of something thats got into the focussing screw, easily solved by dismantling and cleaning. It might go away with use.

Sover Wong (of Nikon F2 repair fame) lubricates the helicoids of prime lenses for £35. I got him to do my Nikkor 200mm F4 a couple of years ago & it came back very nice. Somewhere else quoted me £90 to do the same thing.

Unless you are really happy taking it apart, for the sake of £35 I would be tempted to let someone who knows what they are doing look at it.

Google Sover2repair to find him.

Thanks for the confirmation Adrian, Have you used the service by any chance and what did you think?

WoW they have shot up in price...I could have bought one for £40 two years ago.

You got a good deal one went on e-bay for over £140.00

As an investment I missed out, but at the time had the 24mm Sigma superwide and didn't think £40 for a Nikon 24mm was worth the better perfomance (if you could see it).

I've got a pre ai nikkor 24 f2.8 and it squeaks slightly when focusing. Feels like the helicoids are a little bit dry. Been like it for years with no sign of getting any worse.
