My current kit is, Nikon D50, 18-55 kit lens with IR R72, ND4 & ND8 filters, sigma 10-20

I shoot mostly using the 10-20, and mostly at the wide end of it. My only gripe with this lens is it isn't always fantastically sharp and i would prefer a larger aperture. i use my kit mostly for taking pictures when doing urban exploration - hence wanting wide and fast glass, but i also like to experiment with the camera - and often play about setting up other shots.

I have about £300 (give or take, £400 top limit!!) to spend on a new lens and have been looking at this;

What do you guys think to this lens? And what alternatives are worth looking at?

Thanks

Great lens - Kerso sells it for £365 - great price.

Have you tried the lens at all?

I gave it a go at Focus On Imaging a couple of weeks ago and for the kind of things you shoot might be great if you are happy with the fisheye type results.I believe Hacker has just bought one.

For me, having tried the Sigma 10-20mm for a few days, I bought the Nikon 12-24mm but they are probably £100 outside of your budget unless you are able to get a real bargain.

Although they have a little more barrel distortion than the 10-20, on average the image quality is just a little better.

ps also forgot to mention that I don't think the 10.5mm Nikon will allow you to attach the filters on the front which is why I opted for the 12-24 f4.

thanks for the replies guys.

i've not had chance to try out the lens yet, i want to before i buy one though.

how severe is the fisheye effect from this lens? I already have the sigma 10-20, but f/4 at 10mm is a bit restrictive at times.

I did consider selling the 10-20, and putting the money from that toward a nikon 12-24

i was wondering that when i was looking at the pictures of the lens. that is a potential deal scupperer.. the front element would need protecting else i'd just be scared to ever take the lens out with me.

Even apart from the protection filter, you would not be able to use the ND's you have as well. For protection, the best chance would be is to leave the lens hood on permanently.

Having said that, due to the view through the viewfinder, all objects look much further than they actually are so when attempting to take a fisheye portrait of my friend at the show, I ended up practically pushing it into their face so you need to get used to that.

Howver, don't dismiss it out of hand. I wanted a landscape lens which is why I went for the 12-24, not an urban lens. Also, if I remember rightly, the 10-20 at 10mm it's gives an f3.5 aperture vs the 12-24 12mm end five f4. If these things are important to you for handheld urban shots, then bear them in mind as the 10.5mm is an f2.8

thanks for the example shots.

it is the wider aperture of the 10.5mm that first attracted me to it. The sigma is only f/4 at 10mm, so the 10.5mm would be a marked advantage there.

I think the only way i'm going to be able to make my mind up is to go and try out one of these lenses!
