I've noticed a few threads on TP mentioning Nik Software. Since the release of CS5 does anyone who has Nik feel it was worth the purchase. I'm thinking of getting myself, but thought I'd ask on here first.

I don't see what exactly has changed so drastically in CS5 to abandon Nik software like SilverEfex. It still has its place as it was in CS4.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I was wondering about such things as the noise reduction software, considering the improvements in CS5. On closer inspection you are right though, there are enough distinct differences. I've downloaded the trial versions to have a play.

Do they actually work with CS5?

No, well not on the Mac. CS5 runs in 64 bit mode and thus the nic plugins won't work. The fix is to force CS5 to run in 32 bit mode (right click the programme icon in applications folder and tick the force 32 bit mode box).

Windows versions work fine but they are still 32bit plugins. Nik still promises to deliver 64bit versions but they have not said when it will be available.

Having said that, I'm mostly use SilverEfex and nowadays prefer their LR version of it - don't even have to go to Photoshop.

Yep SilverEfex Pro is worth its weight in gold.

I use it with Lr 2.7 on the Mac, running Lr in 64-bit the Nik Software plug-ins still open with out any problems which is great news. I know with Aperture it needs to close down and restart in 32-bit mode which would get tiring in no time.

I don't hold my breath for 64-bit versions anytime soon though as they have been pestered about 64-bit for a while with no further developments.

I couldn't live without it.... it's my one 'must have' for Photoshop...

i got both the silver and the colour softwares. both excellent, but the silver one is my fav.

Until all the promised 64 bit compatibility is released I'm running CS5 on Mac in 32 bit mode as I couldn't live without Nik plugins... Viveza 2 FTW!

The only plugin I've pretty much abandoned with the release of CS5 is OnOne's 'Mask Pro'... CS5's selection refinements are so much better than CS4.

Sorry to resurrect last year's post, but I upgraded to 64bit Windows 7 last month and can't get Nik plugins to work in either 64 nor 32 nit (yes - I downloaded the latest versions of CS5 and Nik64 before you ask). It crashes on "loading NIK selective tools" on CS5 startup. If I remove the offending part of the Nik software, CS5 boots up and filters are there but do not export back to CS5 when click "save" (no new layer created). Anyone else seen this? It was all fine on old machine running XP.

What's the 'offending part' of the software? The first thing I do is reset PS preferences by holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift and clicking the PS icon to open it - it will then ask you if you want to reset preferences. It's solved a couple of oddities for me, and although not likely it'll solve yours, will only take a few seconds to try.... I know how frustrating it is when you have a plugin that you really want and it crashes in PS..... :bang:

I don't do much editing that Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro can't handle so I'm still only using Photoshop CS3.

Is there a Nik Software program like SEP but that can emulate colour film?

It's the folder containing all the "Selective Tools". Moved it out the way and CS5 runs perfectly and even opens the Nik filters in new window (as advertised) but then fails to export the edits back to CS5. I'll try your reset - ta. Current workround is to use LR3 to do the Nik amendments as new images then open them as a new layer in CS5 to do the masking etc - very tedious and long winded. Wondered if it was an oddity on the Windows 7 platform as the crash occurs in 32 and 64 bit?

OK - tried the reset and reinstalled utterly latest versions of CS5 and Color Efex Pro. Guess what - CS5 hangs up on startup at "Loading Plugins...Nik Selective Tool" and get windows popup "CS5 is not responding" and MS offering to collect and send data on the problem. Gah! Can't live without Nik anymore.

You don't happen to be using an intuous graphics tablet do you, I had a similar problem but on a mac. Contacted NIK and it was a known issue.

Disappointingly, Nik reckoned these were the 64 bit versions but they obviously don't seem to work across all the products. Whatever they've done, they hang up in CS5 32 bit as well. The LR3.4 64bit works fine, so I've had to import to LR, apply the filter, then export again into a new layer in CS5. Very tedious.
