Nik software collection with PS Elements

Is anyone else using the latest Nik collection with Elements 11 (or earlier versions)?

With Photoshop CS, selecting one of the Nik filters creates a new layer (if that option has been selected), and if 'Brush' is selected within Nik a layer mask is automatically added in PS allowing use of black/white to hide/reveal.

With PSE, on selecting Nik I initially get three layers(!), which reduce to a single layer on coming out of Nik. If I select 'Brush' in Nik, I get the eraser tool in PSE, only allowing removal of parts of the layer I don't want, but without the flexibility of a layer mask to put back parts I may have erased by mistake.

Obviously I could add a layer mask myself, but wondered if I was missing something somewhere which would give the same behaviour as PS, or is this just the result of PSE being the cut down version of PS?

I've searched but can't find anything giving an example of Nik being used in PSE.

Thanks Stephen. I have registered and posted, so I will see if I get a response. I'm surprised that no-one on here has this combination. I guess most have Lightroom or the full Photoshop (or are just ignoring me!).

I've just started playing with these in PSE10 (or maybe 9, can't remember).
I just manually add the layer mask after Colour/Silver EFEX has done it's thing - seems to work perfectly.
Not sure why it initially adds 3 layers either

You can't use the HDR plug-in though as that's PS-only...

I normaly only use Nik effex in Lightroom but I remember sombody telling me somthing about smart objects in ps and I found this

Dont know if it helps

Thanks but converting layers to Smart Objects is not available in Elements.

Yes adding the layer mask manually is the way to go, it just seems a bit strange that Nik didn't implement it like PS.

You can use HDR Efex standalone.

I found that if you run a Nik filter from the PSE Filter menu, select brush and then try to apply it, Elements crashes! Choosing the filters via the Selective Menu works fine. I got a response at Elements Village confirming that I am not alone in being able to crash Elements this way. A fix for Google/Nik in their first update after the takeover?
