Nightmare with Epson V750 and Silverfast

I have just bought an Epson V750 and am having real problems with Silverfast. The problems are:

  • The old version Epson supplied is pretty unstable with frequent crashes and hangs. The latest version of Silverfast generates an error R6025 and crashes. I suspect a memory problem of some kind and found this entry in the log file - 16.03.2014 14:17:04.080 sfDebug: CsfFilterAlignment::findAlignmentISRD(): Error no usable blocks for alignment. What does it mean?
When a photo can be scanned with Silverfast, the quality is very good and much better than the Epson Scan produces. The support from Epson & Silverfast is very limited.

  • Does anyone know of any solutions for the Silverfast Error? (I think it may be common with PCs running 64 bit Windows 7)
  • Is there any alternative good scanning software I could consider ? ( I know about Vuescan - but is possible to scan with other packages like Photoshop Elements or Lightworks?)

Patrick, which verson of Silverfast did you get? SE, SE Plus, AI? And I'm presuming the latest version is 6.6 rather than one of the version 8 variants (unless you've spent money on the upgrade).

I have used Silverfast SE Plus (with my Plustek 7500i) but on a Mac, so not much help. You might get some help from the community forums, try http://forum.silverfast.com/epson-f18.html?sid=2db2f35341b78e1392809d90e8d8f4c9

I still have Silverfast but no longer use it, instead using Vuescan Pro like many people here. For less money than upgrading Silverfast to version 8 you get a highly capable scanner package that will work with any scanner you're ever going to buy (probably including the scanner on any al-in-one printer you have). I don't think Elements does scanning, although it may be able to "call" a scanner package?

I got SE Plus 8 supplied with the scanner. I have tried the Silverfast forum, no substantive reply after 6 days. I have had answers but nothing helpful.

I am just trying Vuescan and so far I can't find a feature for negatives on the trial version.

I can see why anyone might choose to stop using it.

It took me about a week of swearing, unhelpful (read useless and money grabbing) customer support and unsatisfactory scans for me to dump Silverfast and move to Vuescan, it's not perfect and has its own quirks but it's much better than Silverfast IMHO.

In the 'input' tab choose 'colour negative' or 'B&W Negative in the 'Media' dropdown to scan negatives (you may need to first select 'transparency' [or similar named option- I don't have a V750 to confirm this with] under the 'mode' dropdown above that).

I'm a registered owner of silverfast (got it with the V750) but gave up trying to understand it  Vorsprung Durch Technik :p:p:p:p

I did trial Silverfast 8, and it is more like a real WIMP program than 6.6 was, but otherwise I can't really help, sorry. Stick with Vuescan. BTW the More button is important!
