Hi all been given an assignment for my course and i dont understand a word:shake: I have already passed 1 course but this one seems to touch on topics we were not taught and has got me worried and i am starting to go round the twist:cuckoo: Any one know what a greyscale test is? or how to construct a zone ruler? i would be eternally gratefully for any help

This seems a little odd to me julie, perhaps ask your tutor why He/She is setting you work which you have not been taught. You have asked two questions that if Googled will reveal what you are looking for  ;)

Go Google greyscale test, Its says something about it being a a chart for fine tuning colour balance in camera's

Its seems odd to me that the course seems to start off slowly and understandable then goes full steam ahead by the 3rd assignment:thinking:. Contacted my tutor but he can take days to answer, which is not good.:shake: Thanks for the help:clap:

Hi Julie

Welcome to TP. When he says zone ruler, I'm guessing he's on about zone system, created by Ansel Adams. It's a system where you determine the exposure for the subject in relation to 18% grey. You place a subject into a particular zone, and dial in the exposure compensation from the +/- 0 point.

Just found an easy write up of it with a ruler for you

It's not difficult to get to grips with, and a very useful way of achieving the correct exposure.
