Hi Kev,

Well if Basic is what you are after then a long exposure is what you need. How long? is down to the conditions on the night. From previous advice and experience I have had, do not have the aperture wide open and use a tripod for sure to avoid nasty camera shake.

Also, may be worth using the Auto-Timer (if you have one) to take the shot to avoid the mirror lifting causing camera shake and/or by you simply pressing the button shaking the camera.

Try not to have the ISO up too high as you will get noise on your shot.

Oh, try and get a motor way without street lights as its more effective!

I am new too and I am going on "basic" advice I have been given :)

Hi Kev,

I always start with these settings and adjust from there, as necessary....

ISO 100
F8
15 sec Exposure

Take a number of exposures, choose the best and then blend them as layers in photoshop.

To get the starbursts on lights you need to close your aperture, a higher aperture number will create a smaller aperture, and you'll get a burst for each blade. Try a few different aperture values until you find one you like.
Other than that, the advice above is sound :)
