Hi I live in London and have been offered to do some shots from top of block of flats looking up and down the Thames. I have a nikon D90. I will use tripod and remote cable but could someone give me an idea for the right setting as I have never done a proper night shot.
And I have some coloured friends and when I photograph them they always come out dark and hard to define there characturists ( exscue spelling ) any help on this would be most welcomed.
Thank you
Barry

There's no perfect setting for your night shot but if it's fully dark try starting off with ISO200, f/16 and 30 seconds.

Whilst you're learning, stick to the wider end of your lens. It's more forgiving of any camera or tripod movement and offers better depth of field (more of the scene will be in focus). To focus, pick a light or a lit object within the scene and focus on that.

f/16 (as suggested above) will combine with the wide end of your lens to give you sufficient depth of field unless your focus point is really close. It will also help to control light-spill from street lamps and other lights.

Whatever settings you start with, if the image looks too bright make the exposure shorter. If it looks too dark, go longer. It's unlikely you'll need to go beyond 30sec in a lit urban area.

Have you got an example shot of your friend(s) with the image exif details so we can see what might be the problem and suggest routes to remedy? You might get some good feedback from the People and Portraits section

Many thanks for your information on night shot, will take it on board when shoting tomorrow.

As for pictures of friends, I have just checked and they are toooo photoshopped but will take some more tomorrow and see how they come out and post them here.
Thanks

Barry, try using Aperture Priority, it might save you experimenting with times. Make sure you mount the camera on a tripod and use a remote shutter release or the self timer. Colour balance seems a bit off, but the Power Station is a great subject. Try Shooting in twilight if you get the chance. It'll help to get a bit of contrast in the sky.
The smoke does nothing for me I'm afraid.
