I'm trying to take a good photo of our town at night (neon lights etc), it's for a friends leaving present. Tried for ages & can't get anything that looks decent, help!

I'm using a Nikon D5100 with a 18-55 kit lens

small aperture, longe exposure and use of a tripod is a must - also try experimenting with the white balance & ISO too

Les

Ps as said an image would be useful ;)

New to this so don't know how to post pics yet.

I don't own a tripod so was trying to rest the camera. I know it's far from ideal. Unfortunately I over spent on the camera & a tripod won't be on the shopping list for a while :0( I might be able to borrow one I guess

It sounds like no tripod could be the problem. That's okay, treat it as a challenge. Try to find something to set your camera on to eliminate any movement and set the timer so that you do not have to touch the shutter.Oh, also lock your mirror by setting the camera to live mode before you shoot. Poof - problem solved...

I think that half the fun of photography (at least for me) is being creative and overcoming the obstacles that keep us from getting that great shot we envisioned. Of course there are those times when I through my hands in the air and say "it's not going to happen"! :bang:

Good luck!

Donk, where abouts are you? If you are local to me you can use mine.

cable or remote shutter release is handy, couple of quid on ebay.

tripod essential, buy a cheapy one for now if skint, my velbon was £15 or so second hand and works fine for what I want.

Dave, thanks for the offer of the loan. My dad doesn't use his so I've pinched it for the time being. Chris, managed to bag a remote for £2 off of eBay so that's that covered.

Off out tomorrow night to experiment with the whole lot.

I'll let you know

Night shooting went really well. How do I put photos on here for critiquing?

Upload to Flickr or similar and post the link here using

Thanks, it's nice getting compliments from people who know a lot more than I do.

Once I figure out how to do the link stuff I'll post it for critiquing

Thanks guys, I can see why people get hooked on this. I was out in a field lastnight at midnight.. dodgy but fun!!
