I'm trying to take a good photo of our town at night (neon lights etc), it's for a friends leaving present. Tried for ages & can't get anything that looks decent, help!
I don't own a tripod so was trying to rest the camera. I know it's far from ideal. Unfortunately I over spent on the camera & a tripod won't be on the shopping list for a while :0( I might be able to borrow one I guess

It sounds like no tripod could be the problem. That's okay, treat it as a challenge. Try to find something to set your camera on to eliminate any movement and set the timer so that you do not have to touch the shutter.Oh, also lock your mirror by setting the camera to live mode before you shoot. Poof - problem solved...
I think that half the fun of photography (at least for me) is being creative and overcoming the obstacles that keep us from getting that great shot we envisioned. Of course there are those times when I through my hands in the air and say "it's not going to happen"! :bang:
Dave, thanks for the offer of the loan. My dad doesn't use his so I've pinched it for the time being. Chris, managed to bag a remote for £2 off of eBay so that's that covered.
Off out tomorrow night to experiment with the whole lot.
Nice shot. You should take many of them at different shutter speeds to see how they turn out. When I did that I was surprised at the image that I ended up liking the most.
