Off to London tonight to capture some shots along the Thames ... can anyone give me some setting tips for shots across the water capturing the various famous buildings etc?
I havent planned this very well as its all last minute, so dont really want to come home with a CF card full of rubbish :'(
Any tips would be verymuch appreciated :love:

Check out the guides and tutorials, I this is bot just a self publication of my own guide there are other guides there that are great

Hi Scot
this uses a filter but if you dont have one, its still about the same

I usually go for Bulb, F11 ISO100, cable release on a tripod

Just make sure you dont get Mugged for your Camera :bonk::bat:

look forward to seeing the end shots-as Dave said- plenty of tutorials to look at on YouTube good luck

can you tell us what sort of level you're at with your photography? do you know your way around your camera? just so we don't seem patronising with any tips or information :thumbs:
 
Thanks for the tips guys, very interesting! Should have done some research first, but all this is very last minute!
Mugged .... hmmm .... didnt think of that .....

Never had an issue with the mugging worry, but then I am very big and very scary, be ready for tourists to ask you to use there camera to take a picture as they see you using a big camera

Im thinking London- largest city in the UK and potentially dangerous for the un-wary

Thanks for all the advise, really helped. Well here we have a couple from last nights shoot. Unfortunately the wheel had stopped turning so couldn't get the effect i was after!

Thanks motogp. These came out far better than I was expecting.

I went for a mixture of F16 and F22 ISO100. I found F8 wasnt quite enough to get the effect of the sky and the water i was after. I found Tungsten WB to be the best, but AUTO also had some good variation.

Hi Azure. Using F22 in aperture priority I found the exposure time to be about 20-30 seconds. Dropping down to F8 was about 10 seconds. Just don't forget to use manual focus. I'm sure you will be impressed with your results once you give it a try.
 
Thanks for that Scott... wouldn't have thought to shoot in Tungsten WB... so ... uber cool, just need to do a bit of playing - gonna be trying some night shoots when I get the opportunity.

Dave ... believe me, these are my first attempt at night photography a part from the odd attempt at the moon! With regards to tips, i am only passing on what tips i have been given and what settings i have used.

thanks for sharing the video, i'm new to photography, i'm planning on getting night time shots when i'm next up london, so i'm trying to get to know my camera and its settings before i go :)
 
Superb shots. I'm amazed that these are your first attempts at night shots. Mine were a right mess.

impressive pictures, i'm still learning the ropes with my Canon EOS 350D, i'm still trying to get my settings right on my camera, as i only got it the other day, after spending hours on my friends EOS 550D, i decided i really wanted a Canon, and practise getting pictures with really good quality, which lens did you use? may i ask :)

Hi razor. I used a nikon 24-70mm for the ones I posted. I also took my 14-24 but I found it too wide for the shots I want.
Good luck and don't be scared to give it a go!
 
I really like these and these are making me want to go and have a do as I am a proper newb. Only issue is that there just isn't much in Manchester City centre as interesting !!!

To be honest, night photography makes anything look interesting ... Give it a go, im sure you will be surprised :thumbs:
