Nifty Fifty?

It's the only thing wrong with the Nikon entry level, D40, D40x, D60 and whatever the newest one is.

The entry level don't have an autofocus motor built in to the body, it means we have to buy the more expensive lenses with the motor in them. :(

Harvey, does this also apply to the older D50 do you know?

Nifty Fifty is a great little lens, just starting out in portraits and this was my 1st attempt with the nifty fifty..........

What's 'DOF'?

as well as the better build quality I reckon you get a slightly better bokeh from the Nikon Nifty compared to the Canon one, just comes off a bit more silkier.

I dont miind MF with Nifty, its mainly on a tripod for lanscapes or portraits and liveview helps, I tried a 35mm on a cropped sensor and personally thought it was too close for portraits.

I can't find myself a Nifty anywhere. Not too worried about the lack of AF on the D40 as I've been meaning to force myself into using MF once in a while anyway. Does the "focus dot" still appear when manually focusing with this lens? The one in the viewfinder?

Pardon my ignorance but would this

Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D Lens

AF on a Nikon D80? I here what people are saying about MF, but AF would be nice for me.

I love my nifty fifty.

I can only talk for the Canon version as thats what I shoot with. It does take some getting used to but once you've had a good old play around with it you should work out the best way to use it (bit like with any lens).

I use mine all the time for portraits

Along with my 17 - 55 IS it is one of my most used lenses, for the price it can't be beaten and is a valuable addition to my kit :)

Finally my birthday rolled around today so managed to get to finally use my new Nikkor 35mm AF-S f/1.8.

Verdict? Bloody good! Autofocus is fast and quiet, the DOF when wide open is just great...so much so I find myself always taking shots with the background OOF regardless of whether it suits the composition or not :D

This will be on the camera for a long time I reckon...

Thanks for coming back with that Ian, and glad you like your new pressie (Happy B'Day btw :))

I got me a 50 from the classifieds in here and I'm still fighting to get it right. Picked out a few of the kids over easter weekend which are a vast improvement but I still haven't got it as right as I like, I shall learn and persevere :)

Mine arrived today from Amazon. Opened it this evening and had a quick go.

First shot I stuck it in auto and the flash made it look whack. Second shot was out of focus

Going to attempt to take some shots of the cats this evening so only a substantial amount of time will tell
