Hi,

I am looking to do a bit of portrait photography and have been looking at different lenses,as a newbie I have not got a great deal of knowledge but this seams to be a good lens and at the price can you go wrong. Is the nifty fifty as good as it's reviews or is there another lens that can produce the same quality without be loads more money.

Thanks

It is great value for money.

Next option would be the 1.4, but thats 3 times the price.

If you really need the extra stop, then its worth it.

I think this is a great starter - they also hold their value pretty well so you can always sell it if you want to change.

Thanks,

I think I am 99% going to get this lens, just really going for a second opinion:):)

Cheers

dont forget on a crop sensor it will be about 75mm not 50mm. still worth the money ive got one on the way to me this week as it happens.lol

Cheers Guys,

I will get one tommorrow:thumbs:

The crop factor does make things pretty tight. I've got a 50mm f1.4 on my 40D and was surprised at how much an effect the crop factor has. Having said that, a 1.6x crop factor brings you up to an 80mm focal length which is pretty good for portraits so you can't lose really.

I love mine and use it for portraits mainly - brilliant in low light although 1.4 would be even better. Well worth the money!

absolutely great lens for the price, you will NOT regret the buy.

I was given this lens as a birthday present and absolutely love it. You will not regret getting it.

Try taking it walkabout sometime and enjoy how differently you have to think with a short prime on instead of a zoom. It's a bit weird getting used to it but hugely rewarding.

They appear to be in short supply, most companies have them on backorder.

If you manage to source one, let us know from where.

i got mine from amazon
like 4 quid more than WEX? with gratis delivery, not sure about there stock now I got mine week before last

I got mine from Amazon too and it's luuuuuuuuuurvley!!!!

Funnily enough, I got one today from a local Jessops. £79 - perhaps not the cheapest around, but not far off. No stock issues.

Appears to be a cracking lens for the money

The BEST lens I have bought so far

I agree it's a very good lens and a very good price.

@ Fresh27. It's a prime lens so in one respect can't be compared to the kit 18-55 that would come with a 400 or 450D. However if I were to shoot at 50mm on the kit and 50 on the nifty fifty, the latter would win hands down.

Very fast lens and super DoF possibilities down at F1.8 (check out my Smugmug gallery in the Zoo section. There's some shots from London Zoo. There's a couple of parrots in a cage. @ F1.8 you can barely see the cage bars and what minute detail of them you can see could be cloned out easily enough. In fact the bars look almost as if they're behind the birds.

Get it. Cracking lens..brilliant in situations like dinner parties etc. When you want to great shots but a big lens on a dslr would be a bit overbearing, plus you will get away with out flash probably which is great in many situations. A bit of candlelight and your good to go..Heard good things about people using Raynox adapters (google it and search on the forum) as a cheap/occasional way of getting fairly good macro shots too..

I've got one on the way to me from amazon, think it was the last one they had in stock.

F1.4 brilliant but in short supply. £245 from jessops:clap:

I just took a couple of shots with the Nifty Fifty @ F1.8. They're in portraits titled Ferocious Tiger.. hehe. The "bokeh" (Blurred background) is ALL a result of F1.8 and has not been altered in any way, post processing. It's a fantasic bit of kit :)

If you ordered it on the the 25th you must have just beaten me, I had it in my basket went to check something came back and it was out of stock. Got one on order now, should get it this weekend.:)

Yes it was the 25th:)

I'm a total beginner and bought one of these last year, my favorite shot so far was taken with it

That was taken indoors with no flash on a not especially bright day, the only draw backs are the lack of zoom and you do need to be a bit further from the subject than you might expect but the ease of use in low light and the sharpness more than make up for it. Its the lens most commonly found on the camera at the moment :)

I got mine today from Jessops £79. I've just bought the sigma 17-70, so I was unsure if I really needed it. I took my 350D in and asked to try it, took 2 photos of my son, and looked at them on the camera, super sharp so I bought it. The wife didn't look too impressed, but like Andy West says it is law that you got to have one lol.

I'm after one of these, but the price is going up and up.

I appreciate this is a something of a subjective question, but would it still be well worth the money if it gets up towards £100 ?

Just Ordered one from Kerso on fleabay... £75 shipped, and I can hardly wait - though seeing as there is nearly a half-inch of snow on the ground around here, Royal Snail will probably take 3 weeks to deliver!

Okay - I take it back - lens arrived this morning 7:45

I'll be out on the MTB later today - hopefully i'll get to test it out a bit :D:D

Edit:
Boy that was cold - spent a couple of hours wandering around near home. Started to get to grips with the new lens - bearing in mind I've only had the camera a month or so, it was a bit of a learning curve. Especially as I'd not tried the new camera in the snow, and wasn't sure how it would react in terms of metering. So, every shot turned into a marathon bracketing session. Anyway - got at least one shot I quite like...

Liked the contrast between the snow and the suede-ey texture of the bullrushes :)

You could get them for £72 Inc postage on Amazon the other day.

Is this the MkI or the MkII?

I've just been offered a MkII for £40 -- should I take it? I reckon I can knock him down to £30.

Try knock him down to £30 however if you can't, then £40 is a steal so long as there is absolutely no damage to the lens. If you can check it out first, I'd do so. Check for scratches, any sign that the lens has been dropped, dust inside the lens etc.

Make sure the AF feature works fine, the focus ring moves freely as well.

One thing to note, the 50mm is a noisy thing when AF'ing but that's normal.

Good advice -- cheers. I've got the lens in my hand and can only see tiny amounts of dust through the lens but all my lenses have that so I'm sure it's OK.
