I am new to DSLR's and I have a Canon EOS 500D with the kit 18-55mm lens and a Canon 55-250mm zoom lens. I've seen the Canon 'nifty fifty' lens mentioned and recommended all over the place, even on non-photagraphy specific forums.
What is so good about it, and why would I want one when I already have 50mm covered?
Thanks in advance!

It's cheap, it's very sharp and it's a great way for Canon to get you hooked on 'fast' (wide aperture) lenses. :) The kit lens just doesn't compare, although it has its uses.

A nifty fifty is fixed at 50mm, and they usually have a very wide aperture (f1.4 or f1.8 mostly) meaning that you can have a very shallow DoF and it also allows you to use faster shutter speeds because of this since it is letting more light in.

I am not that good at explaining things as you can see, but i know what i mean :D

The nifty fifty refers to the Canon 50 f/1.8 II.

It's an excellent lens for the money. The reason why you might want to have one if you already have 50mm covered is that it will give you f/1.8 at 50mm, whereas your current lens doesn't give you this.

f/1.8 allows you to blur the background much better than higher f-stops and as such is more suitable for portrait photography.

Another reason is that it will allow you to shoot in dim light without having to use a flash, which you probably couldn't do with the kit lens.

Hope this helps.

thanks for asking the question statonb
i have just got a 500D plus a 55-250mm lens and have now just ordered a nifty fifty from kerso on here

I bought a nifty-fifty on here and am really pleased with it.

Used it for some recent child pics and was really pleased with it, especially since it's a very cheap lens.

So think you'll find it an excellent buy.

I found it a horribly expensive lens.... as the 85mm f1.8 then followed, then a 70-200 2.8...
