As the title really, which would bring better results and give more impressive pictures?

Currently taking lots of indoors shots of stuff so the 50mm would be good, but want to also get out there taking some creative stuff with the off camera flash. Decisions decisions! :bang:

50mm every time. I've got the 50mm f:1.4 as my first addtional lens when I moved from an F80 to my D70s. I still haven't got a Speedlight and only this morning I took some lovely available light shots of my daughter with it.

Dont think he would be talking about the 1.4, more rather the 1.8. I would go for the speedlight, but depends on your shooting habbits etc..

Difficult really. The 50mm will get you those lovely available light shots full of atmosphere, even in quite dark situations. As soon as you use a flash all that atmosphere has gone. A flash is a pretty essential bit of gear for most of us mind you in other situations.

I'd go for the 50mm, but it's your choice. ;)

Another vote for the sb600 here ( with an sc 29 ) but it depends on what you need to do really , horses for courses and all that .
I believe you can use the onboard flash as master to trigger the 600 off camera . ????? having said that the 50 1.8 is a nice lens to have and cheap too . Just get them both .

I had the nifty for my 400D before I got my 580EX flash and found that even in indoor situations it struggled to give me clear photos as the shutter time required for hand held shots were still slowish. The combination of nifty and flash will give you excellent results for indoor situations.
Since the kit lens is quite decent with the nikons, maybe go for the flash first?

They're both essential. The flash is like a way to upgrade all your existing lenses but I suppose its a bit more limited to indoor stuff mostly... the 50mm you can use for most stuff really and its one of the best lenses ever. So the real question is which one will you get first as they are both amazing bits of kit that will make you really glad you bought them. I don't know what I'd choose given your lenses, you'll be really happy either way :)

I don't get your point. I got the 1.4 hence my reference. The SB-600 is midway in price between the two 50mm Nikkors but it doesn't really matter. Both the 1.4 and the 1.8 Nikkors are lovely lenses.

They're both essential.

No they're not. A fast 50mm is indeed a great lens to have, and a flash can help in some situations but there are many many photographers who never have cause to use one, so neither could be classed as "essential".

Well Ive got to say my nifty was essential last weekend when I was taking pictures of a live band without flash.

So you couldn't have done the same job with any other fast lens? An 85mm f:1.4, 30mm f:1.4? 35mm F:2, 20mm f1.8?

For an item of kit to be essential it would have to be truly indispensable. This is much more likely for a particular requirement than just a general statement.

I'm going to get a Nifty 1.4 - where is the best place to buy?

Gary.

Gary, do you shoot with a Nikon? If so the best prices for the Nikkor 50mm f:1.4 are here. It’s a cracking lens, but I’d only go for it if you really need the extra stop of light. The f:1.8 is truly superb value, and is rated extremely highly by everyone I know who has one. Either way though, a 50mm is a more useful addition to any kitbag ahead of a flashgun.

OK sorry I said a bad word!

I consider them essential for me though as they are both some of the best bits of kits I've used :)

I keep hearing about the nifty 50 but which is the one for the D70?

I have three lens a 18-200VR, a nifty 50 1.8 and a 105mm Macro. The 18-200 and 105 both cost £4-500 and nifty 50 cost about £65 inc postage!!

Digital Rev : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-Nikkor-...ihZ002QQcategoryZ3343QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

£47.99+£15 postage !!

The nifty 50 is a cracking lens it spends more time on my camera than both the other lenses put together!! If I had known how good they were I would probably have bought the f1.4 version instead which DigitalRev are selling for £155.99 inc postage

Oh nearly forgot the nifty fifty DOES NOT INCLUDE A FOCUS MOTOR and for that reason if you are using it on your D40x or a D40 it will be manual focus only!
