It's a Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens for <£60, one of the sharpest lens you can get this side of L-glass. Every bag should have one. I believe there are Nikon versions too.
 
i got the nikon version....

is it still classed as a nifty fifty or will i get told off by canon users??

I love mine, in fact have hardly taken it off my D200 since I got it a few weeks ago, I am sure you will have great fun with it!
 
Almost bought one last week but was offered a used 1.4 USM at a great price so I went for that. The build is somewhat better.
I'm really having fun with this lens and I'm sure you will also with the 1.8.
 
Just been out with mine and I feel I realy should use it more. Great purchase!
