When I got my Canon 50mm F1.8 lens over 18 months ago, it was dubbed "nifty fifty".

Recently people seem to be calling the Nikon 50mm F1.8 a "nifty fifty" too.

I thought it was that the Canon that was brilliantly sharp etc..... is the Nikon the same or is it just a standard 50mm lens?

Nope can't call a Nikon that......Strict breech of copyright :rules:

Canon was first come first served.........:suspect: :bat: :boxer:

It will have to be a thrifty fifty or nifty nikon

But is it as good? Or is it just a 50mm lens, but people think it is as good just because it is a 50mm F1.8 like the Canon?

Haven't got a clue, ya need a nikon person for that one

Nah! They're bound to say it is!! :D

50mm lenses are so-called "standard" lenses. They are the cheapest and easiest focal length to make. They are generally incredibly sharp. The Canon is not alone in making a sharp 50mm. Just about all 50mm lenses are well-known for being sharp. if you go back in time the Olympus 50mm that everyone had on their OM systems was very sharp indeed.

In short, the fact that Canon make a sharp 50mm is no surprsie, now is it a one-off.

Now, where the name nifty-fifty comes from is another question. I dont even know if it even originated from the Canon lens tbh.

And yes, the Nikkor is probably just as good. In fact althought the build quality isnt all that great (the Nikkor 1.4 beats it hands down, I believe it to be better than the Canon in this area)

Does that help Janice?

I've just searched for 'first nifty fifty lens' and google came back with a nikon 1.8 review in the top slot ...

 ;)

And i googled nifty fifty lens and got all canon reviews!!! LOL :D :D :D

They are so incredibly sharp no matter what brand it is. Just as good as eachother.

King.

Well if it helps any, a google on "best nifty fifty lens" does, quite rightly, bring the Canon one up at the top!

:canon:

I googled it and top slot was given to a randy old lady  :gag:

50 is old hat......60mm is where it's at now :D

The nifty fifty is just a name as was given to the Holy Trinity on the POTN forums.

The Holy Trinity being............

Canon 35mm f/1.4L
Canon 85mm f/1.2L
Canon 135mm f/2L

Ah I see. I just thought there was something special about it as it was SO cheap and SO good, and that other makes didnt match up to the quality for the price.

A Randy OldER lady!! ;) (Well, older than in 2006 anyway!!) :D

That will be the chair Joe :D

Now I was just WAITING for one of you guys to say that!!! :D :D

So is it general concensus that the Canon nifty fifty is the 50mm f/1.8 and not the f/1.4 because it's relatively much cheaper and really good? So surely it's gotta be "thrifty nifty fifty".

50mm f/1.8 - thrifty nifty fifty
50mm f/1.4 - nifty fifty
50mm f/1.2 - extravagant nifty fifty
