dpReview says the focus travel is approximately 80 degrees. Mounting it on the camera won't make any difference, apart from the fact that you shouldn't attempt to manual focus when AF is set.
I've had a new lens jam within the first month, due to a scrap of plastic falling in the gears.

It should stick out just less than a centimetre (from memory) when it's fully extended.

ergh.. if the focus is barely moving, then send it back for a replacement.. I just paid £109 to have my 1.4 repaired

Just checked mine and the suggested 80 degrees seems about right, it's certainly less than 1/4 turn of the focus ring from one end to the other. When focusing the front moves out by less than 1cm. I suspect that the lens might well be fine, and it just travels less than you expected.
