Thank you all very much for your feedback this week. a bit of a 50/50 split on the crop and monochrome so here is my final compromise - a bit of a halfway house.

Another vote for your final edit Nick.
The SC/desaturated look really suits the subject.
The tighter crop concentrates the viewers eye too, taking out the more modern building has helped the composition. I like this a lot. Iain

Week 21 - Random

Random sized dots, patterns and spacing form encrypted and secure information running through the teleprinter (electromechanical typewriter) to be deciphered.

Cold War technology defunct in 1970s-80s and now on public display at Hack Green (Decommissioned) Nuclear Bunker. Formally, RAF Hack Green in Cheshire. Here's the web site if your interested in visiting:http://www.hackgreen.co.uk/

Although the contents have remained secret for many years it's a very obvious building of strategic importance slap bang in the middle of the countryside and not very well hidden !

I really like the desaturated version of your leave shot; it's great! Just enough colour that the ship doesn't get lost in the background like it does in the B&W one.

Not looking at Random yet, until I've done mine!!
 
random is bang on theme, I did think we'd have loads of gambling-themed shots :lol:
 
Great one for Random. Nice focus and DoF, and lovely warm vintage tone.

Random - new image added - Fingerprint

Random minutia and pattern on the epidermis form friction ridge detail (fingerprints). Fingerprints are completely unique and more of an accurate identification than DNA. Even identical twins (who share their DNA) do not have identical fingerprints.

Interesting to note that fingerprints are one of the first things to develop in the foetus and in death one of the last things to decompose.....

The technical bit

Mark developed using a zepher fingerprint brush and aluminium powder then lifted using black gelatine. Photographed using Nikon D700, Nikor 105mm Macro lens used. ISO 100 (maximum detail) Aperture F/4.5. Speed 1/60, Tripod

Post processing: RAW file converted to monochrome, increased contrast and sharpening. Paintshop Elelements 10, gradient map added - (transparent rainbow) focus.
 
Very nice, and you've put a lot of work into it. I like the rainbow colours on the red; it works extremely well.

I think I prefer your first one for random still, because I think it's more on theme (I don't see fingerprints as random, more "unique"), but both are t notch.

Week 22 - Temperature

The ignition temperature of sulfur is listed as roughly 230 degrees Celsius, but combined with the wood more likely to be in the region of 600 to 800 degrees. Now that's hot !

My submission for this week then:-

Methodology

Three matches held in place vertically by 3 grips from £1 shop. Piece of white plastic formed backdrop and taken in my kitchen-studio.

Nikon D7000, Nikon 105mm macro, F/3.5 (+1EV,) 1/250 sec. Tripod, remote release. Lighting: natural window light and flash on background.

Post Processing: very little apart from a bit of RAW sharpening and the application of a little vignette.

Like the idea Nick and you obviously put some thought in it ... the DOF I find puzzling as I would have had the focus on the lighted match, i.e. the theme subject, but no doubt you had your reason, maybe my way would be too predictable :) .
 
Random is really clever I think. Temperature has been photographed well and is on theme so well done. Not sure what I'm going to come up with yet though.

Random, I like both shots but I think the fingerprint wins it for me, I love the bright colours.

Quick off the mark with temperature. Cracking detail in the first match and nice exposure all round. I think I would have increased the DOF, but I like the order of the matches.

Many thanks Gramps, perhaps I should have added a little rationale. For me the lighted match in focus was to obvious and I wanted to get away from that, but by putting it in the centre of the image - I made it the central point of attention (not focus) where the eyes rest when looking at it.

I had the three images of the matches in mind and positioned the lens below the matches to shoot up to give it that staggered look running from left to right. I quite like diagonals in photographs as I believe it give quite a strong composition.

I did experiment with a number of variations on the theme including the flaming match in focus but the light burnt a lot of the detail out even with EV and didn't really work. There would be a lot of white in the flame. I did try three matches parallel to the sensor but I felt the composition was very week.

Brilliant take on Temperature & well shot :clap: Possibly a little more DOF to bring the #2 maybe very very slightly more in to focus but just a minor point


Like all 3 of your Random shots but the 1st one of the encryption machine nudge's ahead ...simply for being unusual , love the use of DOF :thumbs:
 
Hi Nick. I think I agree with Gramps on this one; I'd have liked the focus to be in the lit match. I understand what you were aiming for, and all credit for not going the obvious route, but I think in this case it doesn't quite work for the theme.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a very nice photo, just not quite as much when you realise what the theme is :)
 
beautifully executed shot nice spacing on the matches but I am not sure about the focus either its a good photo but my eye is drawn to the focus and not to the flame

Hi all, many thanks for your feedback thus so far this week. The general concusses is that perhaps I should of focused on the lighted match. Fair points but I thought this would have been to easy. As time is still on my side I thought I would do a reshoot but as i'm out of matches this isn't really an option so I came up with this:

Temperature 2

Quite safe, very predictable, and done in a controlled environment (goggles, gloves worn and fire extinguisher on standby) - don't try this at home kids !

Happy to share technique with 52''s via PM but reluctant to share methodology on an open forum for safety reasons. Nikon D7000, 90mm lens, ISO 800, F/5.6 (-8/3 ev bias), 1/4 sec, manual, tripod. Continuous burst mode used to capture ignition.

One hand on shutter release, the other on igniter. There is never an assistant around when you need one !
