Hi - Thought it may be a bit of fun to start a thread about Nicknames for various lenses! From my limited knowledge I know two :-

Probably the most famous "Nifty Fifty" 50mm Prime.

The "Magic Drainpipe" 80-200mm Canon L Zoom.

Sure there are many others! Anyone care to suggest any nicknames they know, or do you have any ideas for new nicknames for your favourite lenses?

I look forward to seeing TP creative minds come up with some! Will update the list below as we go along!

Thanks,

A

THE LIST

50mm Prime (Any Manufacturer) - "Nifty Fifty"

80-200mm Canon L Zoom - "Magic Drainpipe"

50-500mm Sigma - "Bigma"

100-400mm Canon L - "Dust Pump"

10-20mm Sigma - "Wide Boy"

arrrrggghhh for **** sake lens

The dustpump 100-400 canon L

Big Tuna - Zuiko 300 f2.8.

What is this 'nifty fifty' of which you speak? I've just known that as 'standard' for 30 years!

do search for "nifty fifty" and the 250+ threads that come back will tell you all you need to know! Gotta be the most well known lens for both **edit to appease probably one of the oldest arguments on the planet ** Canon and Nikon I reckon.

(P.S I have edited and written twice, as don't wish to infer by one being written first implies any favourability...although you could argue now that one is on top of the other..But hey! :)

I have a collection of names for mine....
28-80.............piece o shyte!
28-135............wojacallit
10-20..............wideboy
70-200............sharp'un
100-400...........long'un

Hmmm. Maybe by kiddies on no money.

I still rate 1.4s above 1.8s. And anyway, knowing Zuikos well, WHICH 50 are we talking about? There are umpteen version of the old Zuiko 50mm f1.8, so I assume the same holds for Nikon and/or Canon?

has often been imaginatively monikered the Nifty Two-Fifty, referencing it's 50mm f1.8 stablemate... All to do with them both being platicky crap that produce pics with blinding IQ

You could say "by both major manufacturers" but then that just opens up a whole new world of fanboy pain!

*cough* sony, pentax, olympus *cough* (in no particular order) *cough*

My names:

Sigma 10-20 = Wide Boy
Sigma 18-50 = Normal Lens
Nikon 70-300 = Big Chief

Just about every electronic item I own or have owned has a name (including laptops, phones, hard drives, ipods, flash drives, speakers, amplifiers etc etc etc)

But for some reason cameras and lenses have never had names. Don't know why, that's just the way it is.

canon 90..300mm; plastic piston I have read elsewhere

Re nikon nifty fifty, isn't that manual focus?

Wow vmlopes... that's one heck of a list!

it kinda killed the thread too!

what about the pancake lens think its olympus:shrug:

From the Sony/Konica Minolta world:

70-210/4 - Beercan
75-300/4.5-5.6 - Big beercan

Both usually good value (although fairly scarce these days).

I've nicknamed mine:

Canon EOS 40D - My Camera
Sigma 10-20 f4.0-5.6 EX DC HSM - My wide lens
Sigma 24-60 mm F2,8 DG EX - My regular lens
Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 IS EF-S - My telephoto lens

It's all very easy to remember :p

The sun is shining and you lot are talking about nicknames for lenses?:shrug:
