weekly NickD's Photo52 Challenge - 2013 - Completed!

Bang on theme, composition wise I would have liked to see a little more of what's going on around or for this to be part of a triptych perhaps?

Technicals are all spot on. Have a good trip.

Rock, like it and I might have asked him to turn around for you :D

Wasn't sure about the BG, especially the guy on the left, but feel it adds to it.

Cheers.

Cheers people... Pleasingly positively response given how desperate a selection it was! I would have liked the time to make it a bit more interesting, but time is not going to be my friend for a couple of weeks.

@ Blondie - ZRX1200R at the minute (Lawson rep obviously!)

Similarly shoehorned, this week is a case of picking something I already have in camera (taken on Saturday though, so it's legal!).

These guys, De Angelis and Cardus, were pretty much having their own little race throughout the Moto2 race. I reckon the two NGM bikes are similar enough to class as a pair, and this is reinforced by the fact that they're following the same line so clinically. It's not as sharp as I'd like, as it was taken through a fence, and there was an annoying heat haze and harsh light, but it's what I've got!

Week 26 - Pair.

Thanks for looking.:)

Wow. It works for me!

I really liked this the moment I saw it.

I'm sure the sharpness "issue" is only evident at larger resolutions.

Nowt wrong with that for me........ any sharpness issues are more than made up for by the perfect positioning and clutter free background, heat haze in the rear actually adds to the shot......

Hi, Nick, ZRX1200R, if that's 1200cc, nutter :D

Pair, yeah agree with what's been said and I'm surprise Lynne - Blondie606 - hasn't been here yet. Although she's not a fan of fast vehicles

Only crit I can add is a slight crop at the top.

Cheers

nice bike shot, nicely captured. Not tried any of this type of shot so can not offer anything in the way of advice.

Hi Nick

how was Assen ? really need to get my butt in to gear & travel over to one of the euro rounds again....way better than most UK rounds ...ZXR1200...lucky boy...cracking bike

Belter of a shot...really good capture of the position with a virtually identical pair of bikes & the heat haze adds to it ...perfick

Hi Nick,
Pair, its all been said above, so just to echo that in saying bang on theme, great composition and the haze adds a little atmosphere and tells a story of how hot a day it was. Good work

Thanks, you're too kind!

It does look a little better on here... wonder if Flickr does something to uploads?

It was the positioning, and the fact they had nothing around them that led to it's selection. Having committed to the shot and submitted it, I do look on it more kindly now. The haze bothers me less.

Thanks!

The bike is pretty bloody quick, but alas I'm old and slow nowadays. Photographing the quick ones is as close as I get to serious speed nowadays!:D

nice bike shot, nicely captured. Not tried any of this type of shot so can not offer anything in the way of advice.

Many thanks!

Great shot

Cheers!

Lovely pair.

I mean, I'm always going to be kindly disposed towards bike shots, but that's a great bike shot. Lovely framing with the curves of the track.

Thanks!

As top level tracks go, there are a few really nice places to shoot from. Really busy on raceday though!

It was a cracking weekend... it always is, but the Doctor's first win since 2010 topped it off beautifully. We go every year and hook up with about 60 of our Dutch and Danish friends at a little site just out of the real madness, but close enough to walk either to the track or the city in about 20 mins. The atmosphere is always incredible, but this year it just went mental!

I never bother with the UK meetings (except for BSB of course). If you want a recommendation, Brno is far and away the most beautiful track I've ever been to, and the beer and food is fantastic and very cheap. Spend your evenings at the Starobrno brewery by the main square, an old German style brewery with beer halls on the front. A great, clean, hangover free beer (German equivalent purity laws) at a Euro a go, and lovely food for almost no money... Oh, and Julian Ryder et al are usually poring over figures on laptops at the bar, and always happy to chat.

Hi Nick :)

Pair - That's a cracking shot, I like the heat haze at the rear it adds a nice feel to the shot, the heat of the race, and through a fence - a cracker

Cheers DK!

Thanks a lot!:)

Righto, here we go.

Reshoot - Below.

I wasn't unhappy with my first version, but I saw a few canopy shots that others did at the time and fancied doing my own.

Below the Canopy by NickD71, on Flickr

Now for the shoehorn (and I really mean shoehorn this time), but I'm out of time, as tomorrow's pretty much spoken for throughout.

I shall state my case thus...

Would we all agree that round is a shape?...
Would we all agree that a Helter Skelter goes round and round?...

Well there we go then!

Round and Round by NickD71, on Flickr

Thanks for looking!:)

Hey Nick :)

Re-Shoot - Lovely colours, i too love the trunk shooting out from the corner, the tree looks huge, great greens and detail on the bark too :)

Shape - Helter Skelter... Perfect, looks like somebody way having a blast too, a well caught moment

Hi
I tried a similar image for below but didn't use it, but i do like that one
Shape nicely caught and works for me, nothing wrong with a bit of shoehorning now and again

Love the reshoot, the branches almost look like veins, and lead the eyes around the shot nicely. Vibrant colours and great composition.

Shape - Bright and pin sharp, I like your take on this weeks theme. Very original.

Well done Nick

Hi Nick

Reshoot..... love it for the very same reasons mentioned by others

Shape.....different idea but definitely on theme , their expressions make it just such a happy shot....nicely positioned In the the frame as well

Brno...yeah , went a few years ago ( albeit in the car ) & had a ball......like you say a really beautiful circuit & managed a visit to the Church of Bones whilst there....very strange but interesting place .....next circuit I really fancy is Valencia or maybe the Sachsenring with a cheeky trip back the Ring whilst there

like the below reshoot - branches standing out well against the green of the foliage......
I wouldn't be able to help myself from trying a horizontal flip to get the trunk starting in the left corner..... :exit:

and yeah - helter skelter is a helix which is a shape, had ideas around screws and twisted wires for this myself..... liking the bright colurs, the sharpness, the fun on the faces and the "headgear" they both have adds to it. good fun being had!

To be precise (and pedantic) a helter skelter is based on the 3 dimensional shape known as a conic helix. So it's not a shoe-horn at all!

Anyway: Good capture of the fun of the fair, and a great father and son moment too. A bit of panning would have sealed the deal but it's only a suggestion for next time, not a criticism.

Hi, Below, I am a fan of this one and have done it myself. Well composed and exposed.

Shape, the faces prevent me from giving you a :rules: :D Can't work out who's having the best fun!

Cheers.

Pair, nicely composed, round and round looks like it was great fun

Cheers people, much appreciated.

The canopy shot was just something I wanted to do for myself, as I'd really enjoyed the ones that others submitted. The light was lovely and did me no harm at all. I laid on my back for it... Must have looked like a proper idiot.

Really pleased with getting away with shape (never knew it was a real shape... thanks!). No idea who the subjects are, I just shot a few frames while sat outside a bar in Hyde Park, and got a lovely feeling of fun and togetherness from this pair. I did worry that the father and son (I assume) were a bit too central, but it works.

Good idea about the panning... I wish I'd thought of that at the time!:)

@ Blondie... Be warned, Valencia is a dry track - No booze sold, and none allowed in. Having said that, the party in Cheste the night before is incredible, it's worth it just for that, and the fact that it's the last round. Estoril is worth looking at too. Cascais, where most stay, is beautiful.

Back to Friday night post and soddit behaviour I'm afraid.

Not had chance to get out this week, and inspired by the 'big sky' type shots that have been posted this week, I decided to try for my own in a quick half hour foray at lunch. Upon uploading the results I discovered that my sensor is spottier than the average McDonalds employee, I assume the result of multiple outdoor (and drunken) changes at Assen. This pretty much ruled any of the small aperture shots out, so I'm posting this one as it's all I have, and I don't want to overrun.

I'm going with 'plenty of breeze' as my tie to the theme, but I appreciate it's pretty thin.

Bring on the next theme!

I know the feeling!...

I like the colours and the flag pops against the blue sky. I feel it's a bit spoilt by all the tree round the top though

Sort of agree with both Andy and Chris about the trees might have been better without them, well done for tying it into the theme though:thumbs:

I agree with the tree comments but if I try to imagine it without them it would be a little empty

OK so lets move on. Where's your speed shot? :naughty:

Cheers all, I think the less said about that one the better! :)

I had plenty of ideas for this week, but no time to get out... Gutted I couldn't make BSB at Brands Hatch last weekend, that would have been perfect.

As it turned out I had half an hour this evening to go and grab something. Inspired by some of the excellent panning shots that have gone up this week I went up to a spot on the main road with a nice background with the intention of grabbing a nice bike shot... only to find the tail end of rush hour crawling along in an entirely unsuitable manner, so it was down to the tracks for me.

I did manage some sharper shots than this, but they lacked the sense of speed I was looking for.

Anyway...

Thanks for looking! :)

I think you gave the crit yourself, good idea and must have been a hard one to catch at speed. Only thing I would add is I think the foreground and background seem a tad on the dark side.....that's it. Well done :)

Bang on theme for speed Nick

Great sense of movement, compositionally spot on too with the train having space at the front.
Small crit, I think I would have liked to see the front of the train in focus, with a fall off towards the rear.
Good panning skills too.

Cheers

Nice one. Well composed and good panning with just the right amount of motion in the BG. The darker top and bottom work for me as they make the train pop.

I'd be interested in seeing a sharper train.

Cheers.

Hi Nick :)

Speed - I really like this one, as I have said in other threads, I know how hard it is to capture stuff like this, and I think that is a great shot, I too like the darker background, nice colours on the train and a perfect sense of speed

Speed: 99% of the way there, I like the slightly blurred train, it seems that your focus is on the logo though, as others have said, if it was on the nose of the train it would have been even better.

Hi Nick

Plenty...shoe horned slightly it maybe but I like it....very sharp , the colors are excellent & I like the frame provided by the tree's

Speed....not tried one of those but I think you've inspired me.....plenty of motion , the dark bits that others have mentioned , I can't see  & I like that the words are in focus...almost an advertising type shot , Good shot mister

Thanks for the info on Estoril , will give it a coat of looking at but am currently thinking bout organising a long overdue return trip to the Ring with some time in the Rhine valley for photography  I'm virtually a teetotal ( excepting the works Christmas doo ! ) so a dry circuit is fine by me :D
