As for the image... apart from perhaps being a little straighter, although with the post modernistic thingy... this works too... I really like it... the extreme shallow DOF suits the style you've gone for...
 
I like this Nick. Maybe just a touch more DOF and levelling the tines, but on the whole :thumbs:

Righto, it's grunge time I guess...

So, I got a nice shiny Lencarta Safari ringflash kit on Saturday so thought I'd put it to use for this weeks theme.

Is it Grunge? I don't know, and I don't really care, but it's my entry for this week! :lol:
 
Not sure it really says grunge, but I don't think it's too far off either... It works very well though... dark and quite gloomy... yet well lit where it needs it.
 
:shrug: I don't know whether it's grunge either, but I like it.
Really nice use of lighting - the shadow behind her is very effective and it has a brilliantly moody feel.

Looks like you had fun with your new kit and it's good to see you with your mojo back.

What's that yellow thing on the floor though (just in line with her right knee) ?
Could maybe do with cloning that out :thinking:
 
Love the shot, I wouldn't say its on theme but to be honest I couldn't care.
The lighting looks spot on.
On 2nd thoughts is that graffiti on the wall behing her...well I class that as Grungy
 
love all three of these - all very different as well so you're really mixing it up - quality.

The lighting in grunge is spot on, and the graffitti gives it more of an edge. the fork is a lovely example of razor thin DOF but it means there isn't an awful lot to look at in the image, but i love that about it as well as it's a totally different take on something.

Really like the processing in the postbox - at any point did your inner monologue read something like 'i'm photographing a wonky postbox at 5 in the morning, what have i done with my life?' ha ha, glad you did though ;)

So, the final picture for this thread (I guess I need to start a new one for the second half of the year?) - this is my take on 'Beginnings'.

This couple are Suze and Matt. These were their first steps outside as a married couple, and I was privileged to be their photographer as they started their new life together. Yes, they were beginning married life ;)

But, this photo goes a little deeper than that, because this was my first wedding as a semi-pro photographer. I was beginning my photography career with this couple, and I couldn't have wished for a happier, receptive and genuinely nice pair of people to photograph.

Suze and Matt, I truly wish you all the best in your life together :D

Just checked out your last 4 themes and I'm well impressed :clap::clap::clap::clap:

Everything's already been said about Post, Metal and Grunge so I'm just going to talk about Beginnings.

It seems to me that they were very lucky to have you too. My only criticism is that I would have cloned out the 2 bright lights behind them as they are drawing my eyes in, past the happy couple.
 
I like that Nick, both the shot and the take on the theme.

Would be tempted to clone out the distant light inbetween them as it distracts the eye just a touch.

Spot on!
 
First off, congratulations on your first wedding job :clap:
I hope the day went smoothly for you, and knowing the standard of your photography I bet they're going to be over the moon with your shots.

TBH it's making me feel a bit uncomfortable offering critique though. I wouldn't know where to start with a wedding shoot and I don't want to be overly critical of your professional efforts.

But FWIW my thoughts on this are :

It's a lovely natural image. You've caught their expressions brilliantly and they both look incredibly happy. IMO you've done a great job of capturing the moment when they step out into married life.

A couple of niggles with it though. I feel like it could do with a straighten and it would have been nice if you could have framed it to get the top of the arch in shot.
I suppose it's one of the drawbacks of this type of natural, candid shot but it's a shame about the bridesmaid in the archway behind them too.
 
Thanks guys. Jill, Dan, thank you for the comments regarding the lights in the Church. I've not sent the couple the CD of images yet, so I'll get that cloned out before it goes off :thumbs:

Sarah: Don't feel uncomfortable offering crit - the last thing I want is for people to blow smoke up my arse. Straightened it will be :) I would have put some up in the People & Portraits section but Arkady went postal at the weekend and I'm now frightened :lol:

For those that are interested - there are about 10 photos on my website here

The B&G have seen a small selection of photos and the bride is said to be 'ecstatic' :D

Glad that the bride is happy with them. Just been over to your website to have a look, and I love no.11.
It's really different to the usual wedding shot. The way that you've posed them and the landscape in the background is absolutely beautiful.
Could maybe do with a bit of healing to soften the crease in her back though.
 
Post is excellent! Love the abandoned look of it!

Metal, awesome focus and dof. Really different take on this theme. Like that a lot.

Grunge is really cool too. Love the control of lighing here. Really draws your attention to the subject and then the shadow leading you into the background. Nice! :)

Finally, beginnings, great shot! And an excellent take on the theme :thumbs:
 
A great idea for beginnings, and encompasses more than one too, what with it being your first as a semi pro. Well done Nick :thumbs: The straighten has been commented on as has the lights otherwise... the key here, is that the couple love it. Personally, I think it's a lovely moment you've captured there, they look happy and natural.
 
Thanks all - the straighten and cloning of the lights was done for the finished image which went to the couple, so thank you for the constructive :thumbs:

Also appreciate the kind words in general... The semi-pro bandwagon rolls on with a 16th Birthday Party tomorrow night, and the next wedding on August 7th :)

Ooh yes, Sarah - number 11... I hadn't actually posed them :lol: I was just getting ready, asked them to stand there while I dialed in my settings and the bride just started picking out local landmarks... I had to be very quick and hope the settings were right! As it turned out, that image - the first I took - was far better than the 'posed' efforts :lol:
