Nick T's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 - Beginnings on page 16

So - I was in Cyprus, and we went to the village where my Grandad was born, and where my dad considers his second home (due to the illegal Turkish occupation stopping him from visiting Famagusta, where he was born), Leivadia.

Ah... lovely and peaceful Nick... I really like that. I have to agree with Sarah though... getting up for the dawn is not an indulgence... the opportunity to lay in bed at the weekends, that's an indulgence.

What do you know.. My dad is in Cyprus at the moment, and his dad had a farm in Famagusta (where my dad was born).

Aah, but seeing as I love landscape photography, for me it was an indulgence :) Also - small world re: your Granddad!

Ok - because it's been so damn hectic this week (story of my life this year!) I'll just do the rest of the catchup now, and I'll crowbar a load of photos in just so that I can be up to date with this week's theme when it gets announced.

So - Week 19 - Ingredients...
What are the Ingredients of a stereotypical greek photograph? Well, for me it's a whitewashed building, set against a blue sky.
This'll do!

(I told you the crowbar would be coming in to play!)

Week 20 - Stop...
Went to the WHF yesterday with other TP'ers. The cats made it pretty clear we should STOP where we were, otherwise we'd be getting hurt...

Week 21 - Isolation...
Back to Cyprus again for this one. When I was out on another Sunrise photoshoot I spotted this little scene. Quality's not great, as I'd left the 70-200 which would have done this justice back in England... Still, I think it came out alright :)

And I'm now caught up! Thanks for viewing, and I'll get round to your threads this week :D

Nick your catchup is very impressive. The colours and exposures in your landscape shots are amazing. I have never been to Cyprus but your photography makes me want to go out there and take a look. Isolation is beautiful and speaks very loudly of a perfect moment of isolation and an isolation that is a positive one. Stop is fantastic, however, i see the big cats fluffy head and from the security of my front room i just want to give it a cuddle:shrug::nuts:

   Definitely some evidence of a crowbar in those first two !!!!

Ingredients : I like the angle and slight distortion on this. For me it adds to the shot.
It's a shame that you couldn't have got a clearer blue sky. Some of the clouds (particularly on the left) look a touch too heavy. But I don't suppose there was much you could do about that.
Not knowing much about Greek culture, I'm a bit confused about the purpose of the building. I'm guessing that it's a church, but I'm finding the loudspeakers dotted around the outside a bit disconcerting

Stop : Just beautiful. Great details in the eyes and teeth and you've really caught the texture of his coat. I really want to reach out and touch him . . . but I guess that wouldn't be such a great idea.

Isolation : The best of the 3 IMO
Absolutely stunning. At this size I can't see any issue with the quality, in fact I really can't think of anything else to say. It's just a beautiful shot.

Brilliant catch-up.
Ingredients - love the angel this was taken at, only slight downside is the amount of clouds but thats not something you can really plan.

Stop - an amazing capture. The details you've captured are stunning.

Isolation - really good, and a good capture and says Isolation to me.

Cheers guys

Sarah: Yes, it is a Church, and yes, they have ruined it by sticking loudspeakers on the side of it :bonk:

As for the stop pic - if you want to see more photos of the gorgeous cats at the WHF then I have a set on flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/rodneytrotter/sets/72157624040386361/ :)

Thanks for the positive comments on Isolation - for me I would have preferred more vivid colours, just seems a bit muted for me because I had to use my Sigma 105mm macro for it (as it had the longest reach of the lenses I took out to Cyprus)

Good work Nick, great catchup.

Ingredients, apart from the speakers which spoil it... shame... anyway, it's a corker of a shot, and works lovely together.

Stop... really wouldn't want to mess with that cat... wonderful image

Isolation... A superb image, lovely warm tones, and someone enjoying a spot of isolation too

Great way to catch up Nick. Man i wish i travelled more now, these are beautiful. Especially like the fisherman shot, everything about that composition is just right and the purple hue it has is amazing. It's a winner.

Ok - another dump and run from me, although I am now starting to lose enthusiasm with the whole project. I don't have the time to do the photos I want, and the themes that are coming out are nothing short of crap (imho) so I'm really struggling at the moment.

Without further ado. Here's my QUALITY shot of the week. It's another big cat photo...

4651196410_30a6b2ffa6_b.jpg

This one really does show the QUALITY of the 5D Mark II when combined with the 70-200mm f2.8L IS II lens :)
(And I'm hoping it will look quality on the 16x12 metallic print I ordered yesterday!)

That certainly is quality Nick.....(no kit jealousy at all :( ) I am struggling to find inspiration for some of these themes too but they can only get better...can;t they??? :D

I have to agree with this weeks theme being poop but your image is quality. So much detail and works really well in B&W

Indulgence: This is a stunner, Nick, with the light on the clouds, the colours and the composition all spot on.

Ingredients: I agree this should have a clear brilliant blue sky, but I like the angle and the shape of the building.

Stop: Fantastic detail in the fur. You definitely wouldn't ignore that warning to Stop! :D

Isolation: Definitely fits the theme but I don't think it's quite as strong as your Indulgence shot. There's nothing wrong, except maybe the sky is a bit flat but you can't conjure up skies to order.

Quality: Top quality, imo, Nick. I know what you mean about losing enthusiasm sometimes, especially when the themes are uninspiring and time is short, but please don't give up - we're nearly half way through and you have some fantastic shots already. I always think a rubbish theme is a bit like cough mixture - I hate it, but I suppose it will do me good!

Jean

Really like all your catch up shots, mate. The textures in the lion portrait WILL look fabulous on metallic.

Big metallic print will look seriously nice

Definitely a quality shot

I know how you feel about the themes though Nick. I am losing enthusiasm myself at the moment :(

Andy

I have to agree with you Nick the themes seem to be getting worse and leave little for the imagination, i can understand how you can loose faith. Hang in there though. Your big cat is excellent, is it wrong that i want to give it a big hug?

A beautiful set of images here, Nick. The odd crowbar is forgiveable when the themes are this hard and the quality of your pictures is this good!

Phil

That's a stunning shot of the Lion Nick... I'm sure it'ld look good on any form of large print.

Guys, thanks for all your comments this week. It's appreciated, and it's giving me the boost that I need to knuckle down with this a bit.

Rather remarkably (IMHO), Loxley got the prints to me today - I consider that great service seeing as I only got them ordered late on Saturday afternoon. Big  to Loxley. Also, the quality of the print was very nice, but the metallic paper... There's a certain angle that gives it a beautiful sheen.. Dreamy. :D

Righto... Week 23 'Post'.
This morning, the wife woke me up at 4:30am to take her somewhere... :gag:

On the way back, I stopped off at Foxton Locks to try and get some nice photos. I failed. No inspiration. So I drove home.

On the way, I found this postbox.

4692187119_8613b842d7_b.jpg

Yep, it's about as original as a knock knock joke, but at least it fits the theme this week

Nick, this works. I'm sure it'll be a common shot, but the lean of the box and the cross-process gives it some interest.

:plusone: but also adding that the dof of field adds interest.

Phil

spot on Nick

Composition and processing make what could have been a boring snapshot into something great.

Andy

I like it too Nick, the processing, dof and jaunty angle of the post box all add a little something to the image. I am not sure about the sky though
Still a great take on the theme. Iain

Cheers guys  Not really sure what I could have done with the sky though - the light was so bright it was crazy!

Very good Nick, gotta agree, the pp and the angle of the box really work excellently

I like the processing on Post on this Nick. I agree with the others it helps to make the shot.

Like this, find the blown area top left a tad distracting but it had to be included to get the great composition you've got. The processing is what makes the image though.

Dan

Whether you liked the theme or not Nick, quality is absolutely superb
Beautiful shot and it'll look great printed.

Post : Maybe not the most exciting subject matter, but it's already been said that the composition and PP have given this the lift that it needed to make it work.

It's a shame to hear you losing enthusiasm. I hope you find "metal" a bit more inspiring for this week.

Thanks Sarah... Actually - I have nothing for 'metal' this week either. I'm at a blank

Appreciate it Dan :)
(I can't actually believe I'm going to do this, but...) The top left isn't actually blown ;) There were no clouds / detail in that part of the sky in that actual image - which is probably down to shooting at around 6am , so the x processing effect has just turned it yellowish. But the histogram shows it's not blown (apart from one really tiny area to the very right where the trees start) :)

Righto, week 24 - Metal gets the Nick T treatment.

For this weeks attempt, I thought I'd take a post-modernistic abstract juxtaposition of an everyday item which has remained fundamentally unchanged throughout the passages of time.

In other words, I couldn't think of anything interesting to photograph, so I took a picture of a fork, and added a fancy effect.

See you next week

Well that's definitely an interesting effect :D

I'm not quite sure what to make of this. . . so these are my random thoughts as they came to me.

The end of the tines are absolutely pin sharp and there are some very interesting reflections there.
I love the blue-purpley tones in it.
Not too sure about the very extreme narrow DoF. I wouldn't have known it was a fork at first glance, but on the other hand that's part of the appeal.
The angle is a bit offputting. I would have preferred it aligned straight.

On balance it gets a , but it's just so different from any other fork image I've ever seen that I'm left feeling a bit bemused
Although I think that's probably a good thing.

I didn't think I'd like the narrow DOF but the more I look at it the more I like it.

Nick i like you post shot, it may be the obvious choice but i like what you have done with the processing, it gives it that summers day look.
Metal looks a bit alien, its an interesting shot though and keeps me looking at it trying to figure things out.

interesting take on the theme, 1 point but i think its just me personally the fork tines would have to be all the same level. Not dissing the shot as its great and purple/blue hue on the underside are cool.

keep up the good work.

There is a lot to like about this - the simple subject, plain background, very shallow DOF and dreamy colours. I like the uneven tines but not sure about the overall slight tilt. I find it difficult to decide on this because the signature is distracting, but I think the tilt actually makes it more dynamic. Nice one, and certainly different!
