As I was wandering around the web today, I came across a list. I know the web is full of lists. This was a list of "100 things I've learned about digital photography in the past year". I can't find the link now. (Well, I could if I tried, but I don't need to for the purpose of this post). Lists are usually web filler and contain a lot of stuff you already know. They're brilliant displacement activity, whether you're writing or reading. When you're making / reading a list, you're not doing work.
The one item in this particular list that stood out, however, was down at number 34 (or somewhere).
I will never again simply say: "nice shot" as a comment to a photo.
The obvious inference is that is much better to try and decide why you like (or don't like) the photo and then articulate your views. That way the photographer gets good feedback (either positive or negative). That way the photographer is more likely to come and look at your own photos and provide similarly constructive criticism.
Henceforth, I will endeavour to abide by that advice. Which also should (I humbly suggest) be known on this forum, from now on, as "Rule 34".
Please feel free to direct me back to this post should I digress at any stage from now on. (Past posts don't count - I know, I've done it many times).
