Nice review of the Canon 40mm STM on DPReview

I like my 40mm a lot. My only niggle being the electric motor controlled manual focus, but as I use AF 99% of the time I can live with it. IQ is much sharper than my 50 1.4 at same apertures, and focal range feels much more useable to me on FF. I am using it as a substitute for a 24-70L II (until I can afford one that is).

It's a shame it's not an f/2. Other than that it looks like a great replacement for the 50mm f/1.8 II.

iv'e not long since bought one of the 40mm 2.8 and for the money it's a fantastic lens
i was in a dilemma of purchasing the 50mm 1.4 or the 40mm pancake and for me the pancake was a better buy

I own both. The pancake will definitely see more use, but the 50 wins out when light is at an absolute premium. However, for half the price of the 50, the 40 is a great walkabout prime.

I'm looking to get one of these perhaps to fit my wifes new 100D. I wonder if Canon will release some more pancakes?
