Hi Guys,

I saw this in the sun and it intrigued me, I very much like the effect on Sir Alan's face, looks almost like HDR - any ideas?

I mention HDR but of course, this tends not to work well when photographing people as they need to be *very* still - though it might not be a problem on something like a 1d MkIII I think perhaps this was a pseudo HDR or a contrast mask?

You can make an HDR from a single RAW file, where you've altered the exposure (eg -1, original, +1) - no need to worry about subject movement then...

I think there's a chance that this is a lighting effect though, some pretty full on lights overpowering the ambient a little.

Yup, thats what a psuedo HDR is - I was just wondering if it was done here...

Just the lighting I think and maybe slightly de-saturated.

Yup looks like a simple desat option to me. Or maybe he just had a dodgy curry!!!

I have a feeling its a comp. Cool lighting, id guess its 2 beauty dishes or octa's and some fill from a ring flash mounted above the camera with some heavy frost on it.

looks like a comp, lass on the right is getting some suggested lighting from the "setting" sun behind them as is the hair of the lass on the left, alan sugar has lighting on both shoulders, the front of his jacket and his right hand is highly illuminated, (which could be from some good lighting i suppose) plus if you look down his left arm he stood very well to get that pinstripe of his jacket perfect in the shot, how he made it thicker than the other stripes i don't know ;).

tbh i don't think he'd stand there with his future minions behind him, imlo he's been shopped in there.

i am probably wrong of course:suspect:and as i'm new to all this i will happily be corrected and listen to the explanations of it all, please don't flame, i am here to learn;)

and after trawling through 80 odd pages on here, boy do i now know i need to learn a lot from you guys :)

I did a similar thing with a picture of my son on holiday with a single file and ran it through an HDR program,it gives it a nice bit of detail with the shadows but not too much.

Actually, I can see what you mean about that picture, it has that kind of graphic novel look about it, as if it was hand drawn by a very VERY good artist. It's a good effect, though.
Just imagine the "DC Comics" or "Marvel Comics" icon and perhaps a title like "Captain Enterprise" on that picture and you might be able to see what I mean.

There's a process called the Lucis Effect, which, at it's extreme, gives a high contrast, gritty, graphic look. It's carried out on raw files, using extreme settings. But you can then back off the effect to suit your taste, desaturating, removing some contrast etc to get the look that you're wanting. I've done a few and it's quite addictive, but it's not suitable for every picture. Anyway, it's the nearest process I can think of that would get something similar.
