Was wondering if any one here has used a microUSB OTG connectotor to connect a USB device (flash drive/card reader/camera etc) to an Android tablet?

I have just been given a Nexus 7 [Jelly Bean 4.2.2] and was seeking others' experience(s). I am off soon for a driving tour of the West and North West of Ireland. Thought it would be useful to view my daily pictures.

I use this one.

Does the job - connector seems sturdy enough, although it faces towards the right (when looking directly at the tablet), which means when it is propped up in most stands, it'll be facing towards the sky rather than towards the ground, which is not desirable.

I don't use it for any photographic purposes - good apps with RAW support were severely lacking the last time I looked - but it's fine. I use Nexus Media Importer since I didn't want to root my tablet.

Many thanks for that.

Will give it a go for sure. Certainly cheap enough.

I have a LaCie 80Gb portable hdd which needs a Y USB for power which I use a mains usb power plug for so should be able to make it all come together. I see your recommended cable is good for the S2 which I also have

Many thanks

Indeed, I used it on my S3 with no problems. It's amazing what you can do - I hooked up my printer and printed something directly from the phone (I know this feature has been available for years, and wirelessly at that, but I've never done it before!) and hooked up a mouse - which is a very odd thing to do, using a cursor on a touch screen phone.

Can't comment on using a two port USB bus powered drive as I only have 3.5" drives though.

Thanks for your input and experience.

I have ordered the OTG cable. Along with an official Nexus 7 dock from the UK Asus store (£24.95).

I think I will have a useful means, after a day of photography, to review and transfer my files. The screen on the Nexus 7 is very nice.

Having the car will make carrying kit easier and as we are moving to different guesthouses on 1 and 2 night stays we should be able to reduce kit and luggage to 3 bags including clothes.

Will think about keyboard and mouse. Bluetooth may be an possibility but we are trying to plan a much bigger trip across Europe and minimise weight etc.

There are some nice keyboard docks around, with lots of detailed reviews - always very helpful to have. That said, I've managed to survive without one, and with a well designed text input app (I use SwiftKey), not absolutely necessary.

Agreed. Not sure about a small keyboard. Gets closer to me taking the laptop....

I wanted the dock for home use to hold the tablet to watch Sky Go etc in bed or in the office.

Having just bought a Nexus 7, I investigated the OTG cable used with a SanDisk Micromate SD to USB device.

I installed the Nexus Photo Viewer APP, and apart from having to cycle the power to the tablet it works OK.
