I am still very much a beginner but my main interest is wildlife and birds.

I am still using the kit lens but was just wondering what recommendations you would have for a longer lens? I was looking at a 2nd hand canon 55-250mm. I really only have a budget of £100 at the moment, which i know isnt a lot but due to various things its all i can spare for the time being.

Is the 55-250mm a good option for starting out photographing birds/wildlife? Would a cheaper option of the tamron 55-200mm be worth looking at?

For £100 the 55 - 250 is great, can't think of anything that is better value.

I know canon is obviously the better lens, should I disreguard the cheaper lenses?
 
Another vote for the Canon - imo nothing to touch it for the money:clap:

Hi Gemma

Yes, for your money, the 55-250IS is a cracker of a lens and well worth it. My daughter has one and gets great results with it - certainly a lens I'd recommend ...
 
Another one for the Canon 55-250, got mine about a month ago from HDEW for £120 new if you don't mind taking the risk on a grey import and HDEW will give you a UK VAT receipt if you ask :thumbs:
 
Another vote here for the Canon 55-250mm - one of my favourite lenses - produces some really nice pictures for the price.

Wow! I can't wait to get one! I am more than a little green looking at this pic! I hope I do the lens justice once I become a little more experienced!

We have jays, woodpeckers, goldfinches, bullfinches and all sorts of little birds come to some feeders I have put outside my office so am desperate to get a lens to practice on them!! :)
 
Sounds ideal Gemma

If you can - see if you cen get a few twigs/sticks up for the birds to perch on before they hop onto the feeder. You can get some nice natural looking shots that way.
 
As I said, it's one of the better shots there were lots of bad shots from that day too! I think that was just a particularly cooperative Red Kite... :)

I noticed that Simply Electronics (which is where I bought my copy of the 55-250 from) is selling for £116...

Can anyone tell me what the difference is in the first and II version? I can't see that there is that much price difference between the two.
Also is the IS noticeably better?

Very little difference in terms of optical quality (if any difference) there is a slight redesign of the case and that's about it. Both are still a plastic mount and work well. I'd pick up whichever you can get hold of at the best price.

Many thanks, having watched a few on ebay there isnt much in price in either variation anyway.

I have seen a lens on ebay and it says in the description

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A CANON EFS LENS AND WILL ONLY WORK WITH CANON CROPPED SENSOR BODIES - IF YOU'RE NOT SURE PLEASE CHECK YOUR CAMERA BEFORE YOU BUY.

I have a EOS1100D i just presumed any canon lens would fit. Am i wrong to think this or am I just reading this wrong? Does he mean that if they have a different branded body it wont fit. (which would make sense!)

That will work on your camera all modern canon lens will work on your camera the only modern canon lens that will not are the very new EF-M as they only fit the mirror less system

Where as an EF-S will not work on a full frame sensor camera eg 1D 5D or 6D
