I have a canon 17-55 f2.8 is and really like it. Would love to get a 2nd lens - any suggestions?

70-200mm IS f4.

Depends on your budget and what you want to shoot. The 70-200 f/4 IS is a superb lens if you want more reach - the non-IS version is also very very good if you don't want to spend £650-£700

A 50mm f/1.4 is also a great lens if you want to get a bit creative.

If you fancy a wider lens, a Canon 10-22, Tokina 11-16 or 12-24 or Sigma 10-20 are all good options - probably in that order.

I have the 17-55mm, 70-200mn f4 IS and the 50mm f1.4 and i am toying with the idea of selling the 50mm. Just don't use it enough.

Whereas I have the 50mm f2.5 and it's my most used lens, I also have the 100mm f2.8 macro which is a fab lens.

What are you looking for? Are you missing the extra reach of a longer lens, find yourself wishing you had a wider angle to shoot with?

I think next for me will be the 35mm f2 while I save up for a 70-200 f2.8.

Like the others said its hard to advise not knowing what direction you want to go. Portraits, macro, wildlife, landscape, walkabout lens and not forgetting budget. A bit more information and any advice would be much more useful.

I am interested in buying a lens for my canon eos 40d for sports photography, any suggestions and is it worth buying a doubler? Thanks

In that case I would go for a 70-200mm and go for f4, f2.8, with or without IS depending on budget. I don't have the 70-200mm f4 so not sure how it is with a 2x as it will then become an f8 and you will need good lighting to use fast shutter speeds and also check if it will still autofocus. the f2.8 is heavier but obviously more expensive and also much faster. With a 2x becomes a f5.6.
Other options are primes 200mm or 300mm again f2.8 or f4 and the same issues as above. I have the 300mm f4 which is an excellent sharp lens and works well with both 1.4 and 2x convertors

Thanks for your help so far.
I am looking for lens with longer reach. Have started taking more landscapes and street style photography.

Hi Gerry

An idea of budget always helps with recommendations...

As has been said above the 70-200 range are very nice lenses and would fit with the 17-55 you have.

There is also the 24-105 F4, which has some overlap on your current model, but could be well suited to landscapes.

I used to have a 28-135IS lens as a walkabout lens and really liked it

At the other end of the price range, the 55-250IS is a cracker of a lens for the price (around £160).

Hope this is of some help...

Sorry - budget no more than £400. Thanks for help already given

Then i'd get the 70-200mm non IS. When i only had one lens, i would find myself wanting more reach than a wider angle.

Or you could get the 55-250mm IS and a UWA.

I would agree you should definitely look at a longer zoom - the 70-200 F4 is probably a good choice.

Question for others on the thread (the OP may find the answer useful). I currently have the 70-300mm IS (non DO) - I got this as it's a bit cheaper than the 70-200 and it gets very good review (described by some as an L lens in disguise). I also thought I might feel silly carrying the big white one around!

The question - is the L lens worth the extra money? How much better will the images be? I'd say I'm very happy with the images I get from my 70-300, and it's nice and subtle. (I'm sure one day I'll succumb to L envy!)

Eddie

I had the Canon 70-200L and sold it to buy a 70-300IS plus money to put towards another lens. I've since sold the 70-300IS, bought a Sigma 120-400IS and now I have the funds again (well a 0% credit card) I've just bought another 70-200L to complement the Sigma.

In my honest opinion, the Sigma is the best lens due to its reach and amazing IS but its pretty damn big which is why I bought the 70-200L again. I also wanted something faster than the Sigma for outside family shots at a distance with good blur.

I wouldn't sell my Sigma but I would class the other's as disposable personally. I think you'd be happy with any of them but for real reach the Sigma is amazing value.

What do you want to shoot that your current lens cannot do?

I am back to thinking about getting another lens. As said before I have a canon 40d and a 17-55mm F2.8 lens. I am looking to get another lens with further reach for landscapes, street photography and general photography. My budget would be between £400-500 and would be happy to buy preowned.

Suggestions before included 70-200 f4.

Any other suggestions or comments would be most welcome

Depends how much extra reach you want. You don't mention wildlife so I guess nothing extreme.
Canon 28-135 is USM new (this is what I have)
Canon 24-105 L second hand
Sigma 150-500 second hand (new is £600 and this will be my next lens)

Why not try a prime? 85mm f1.8 is a lovely lens, significantly longer than your 17-55mm and well within budget.

Extra Reach! i would consider,

Tamron SP AF 70-300 F4-5.6 DI VC USD for £280 Amazon, Its a great sharp lens with 4 stop immage stabilaser. Well worth a look

Or as already been said Canon 70-200 F4 non IS

I had a 70-200 f4 L non IS and it really is a super sharp lens throughout the whole range. I sold mine for £360, so you should get a good one within your budget, and got a 70-200 f2.8 IS L which is also a fantastic lens but more than double your budget.
I've got some zooms but I've only got a 50 1.8 and 100 2.8 L macro as primes and I've got a 5DMkIII on order and I think I may go for a 50 1.4 next to go with it or maybe a 35 or 85 prime instead.

Thanks for all your advice. Need to go and read up about these other lens

I am still looking to get another lens. I am looking at canon 18-200. Any thoughts on this? Am looking to spend no more than £450 and currently have 17-55. Want more reach for all round photography

In door or out door photography? I find that with enough info the forum members here can help guide you through anything. The key is to give them every bit of info from the start. I live in the u.s. and have tried local forums but nothing compares to the help I get here. This has forum has become my field guide/learn photography center.

If I may, you said you had a f4 and sold it for f2.8. 70-200. I am trying to decide on which one to buy. I currently have a 17-55 and want to extend my reach. I understand the the apiture vs light part but I would really like to hear you opinion on the two, a comparison if you will. Thanks for taking the time to help.

24-105 F4 as its a fantastic all round lens that's wide enough for landscape but has some reach too. I visited New York to shoot the city and pretty much only used it leaving all others in the bag in the hotel..... if yuo have the budget go for the best glass possible in other words L lenses.

+1 for the 24-105, I've just recently purchased this very lens and I think it is one of the best all round lenses around. I was toying between this and the 24-70 2.8 just due to the fact it was a faster lens allowing me to achieve a nice DOF, but in the end and bit the bullet and purchased a 24-105. It's weight is ideal and when you get the hang of it, produces some amazing pictures. It has a good reach and includes IS if needed. I have never used the 24-70 so cannot say which is better, I just think it is an ideal all round lens. I use it on a Canon 550D. Hope that helps a little. Why not hire some lenses and try before you commit to any one.
