Hi folks, I have just read reviews for tons of non dslr cameras and thought I had decided on the Sony nex 6 but I just read one review which said the choice of lenses are lacking and are overpriced compared to 4/3rds systems.

Now I am stumped and I was wondering if its true that the nex lenses are overpriced and thin on the ground and if they are then could you recommend me a camera in the 4/3rds mount that has the following.

A hot shoe mount
Can be connected to studio lights
Excellent image quality.

Video is not that important tp me and neither is high iso performance.

How many lenses do you need?

I mainly use the Sigma 19mm and 30mm with the Nex 6.(They also do a 60mm)
There are 10-18, 16-50, 18-105, 18-200, 55-210 and 28-70 zooms in E mount from Sony as well as 16mm, 20mm, 30mm macro, 35mm, 50mm, and the Zeiss lenses for Nex.

I use a lot of older manual focus lenses via adaptors with my Nexes- Zeiss 50mm 1.8, Helios 55, Industar 50, Olympus 50 1.8, Olympus 75-150, Yashica 28/50/55/135/200 etc.

Hi kendo, the answer to that would be not many. I had a gf3 and hated its size and lack of viewfinder. I used the 20mm f1.7 and the 45mm f1.8 almost all the time. Are the nex lenses of similar quality around the same price?

I have a sony a7r now and I have been looking at the nex-6 as a second body, to attach my FE35 f/2.8. I would primarily use a second body for street photography and snapshots and I'd like a very good af.
I have also been considering a second hand olympus omd em-5 and a 20mm f1.7 for the same purpose. There isn't a big price difference between the two options.

'Not many'
It's surprising how many are available, and yet the forums would have you believe there are hardly any.
The Sigma lenses are some of the best available especially at their price point.

Cool. Cheers mate. I'll read some lens reviews before i decide for sure.

i dont think theres much missing from the emount lineup for a normal persons useage, and the sigma primes are good and cheap too. i think only the macro lens was silly price vs the A mount one, so my mum uses the 30mm 2.8 A mount macro, but for macro you can get plenty of great old manual lenses in the £50-150 range.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 seems like a contender. I've just read a couple of reviews and it seems excellent although i'm not sure if it can be tethered to stidio lights or used with triggers. I will keep digging.

I'm guessing you want a modern mirrorles camera, NOT a 4/3rds mount camera.

What you want is "micro 4/3rds"

And, in my opinion the NEX consumer lenses are not overpriced at all, very common infact, but the top-quality Zeiss models are overpriced.
Many micro-4/3rds lenses seem too expensive also, but there is more choice and they are in general sharper, smaller, lighter and with faster AF than the NEX lenses.
It is a big complex subject.

Let me repeat : you do NOT want 4/3rds gear. (It's good, but not what you are asking about...)

You're right mate it is micro 4/3rds. I knew that I just didn't write it. Thanks fot pointing that out.
