We are spending a fortnight in a secluded cottage and have been told of lots of visiting wildlife to the garden ..
we are staying at Newtonmore, nr. Aviemore, Inverness-shire.
anyone know of places to go and wildlife to photograph around and about ???

Not so much wildlife but Highland wildlife park is just up the road, you can always head to Loch Garten rspb site aswell.
 
In addition to Loch Garten, the Insh Marshes are a few miles north of Newtonmore.

If you have transport, and don't might a 120 mile round trip, you could visit Chanonry Point on the Black Isle. I have been there three times and had very good views of the dolphins every time.

There is also Udale Bay on the other side of the Black Isle. Both Udale Bay and the Insh Marshes are RSPB reserves.

There's a place in aviemore, I think it's a trout fishery but has ospreys that use the lake for lunch,if you head out of aviemore as if you were going to drive up to the ski centre it's not far out the road on your left
 
Lucky you - one of my favourite areas in Scotland and we go up pretty much every year when visiting the folks. I think whilst there are specific places (already mentioned) the best thing would be to don yer walking boots and head into the hills. Plenty of wildlife to see whilst out walking.

Loch Insh is just around the corner so I'd head there. It has an rspb site - Insh marshes. The nearby osprey centre mean the Boat of Garten is good too.

Maybe take a drive (and park and go for a walk) north to Grantown on Spey, turn off and take the Tomintoul to Corgarff road - spectacular scenery and goes up high past the lecht ski centre.

Head North to the north side of Inverness (40-60 mins) to Cromarty for a spot of dolphin watching.

I'd also recommend drives up Glen Affrick, and another past Glen Garry.

Loch Ness - look out for Nessie ;)

Finally, head to the Aviemore ski centre, and take the mountain railway to the top - beautiful views when not shrouded in rain/mist!

You'll certainly see lots in the two weeks there.

And I've never had a bad meal in the Boat Hotel, (Boat of Garten). Try eating in the bar - very good food!

Take the road up to the Ski Centre. I was up there the other day and there were plenty of Reindeer about.
 
We used to stay in Boat of Garten, year after year, maybe 25 yrs ago, and would occasionally see Capercaillie around the Loch Garten area, and once near Carrbridge. The best time to see these was around dusk, and if you see a male it is instantly recognisable as it is huge! Sadly they are very endangered now - http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/c/capercaillie/index.aspx - but if you are lucky enough to get a snap of one, please post it on here!

Ptarmigan can be seen very high up, which means getting right up into the Cairngorms - maybe ask the right person in Aviemore, and you might get a pointer.

If you get up the right Glen either on foot or in your car you can see all sorts - Eagle, Red Kite, Peregrine Falcon, Red and Black Grouse, Red Deer, Mountain Hare, Short Eared Owl, etc, and if extremely lucky, you could see Crossbill or Pine Martin if in the pine forests!

that would be Rothiemurchus. ;)

unfortunately they dont allow walkers any more due to fly anglers casting their fly's.

I believe they run guided tours now but its no longer just a couple of quid for a walk. you have to buy the passes. :shrug:

I was at Rothiemurchus a couple of years back and bought a pass for the fishing ospreys, there were six (ospreys) visited that morning.Your day starts at 05.00am until around 09.30,thats when the anglers arrive.
 
If you're there this coming weekend, Newtonmore are playing Kingussie in the Camanachd Cup Final at Inverness. Plenty of activity to see about the town I would expect.

I'm up in Aviemore with the wife and my cousin & partner on the 24th to the 30th (staying in a rented cottage)
You will not be stuck for things to photograph. I take my camera gear with me every year without fail there is that much to shoot!

I'm in a rented cottage in Newtonmore ...from the 34th to the 8th Oct.
cant wait.....
only 10 more sleeps ... lol

Now living in Newtonmore
we have a tearoom and studio opening in Feb ...:)
 
Wow - you're a fast "mover"! It didn't take long for you to catch the Scottish bug, which is so easy to catch. Good luck with the tearoom and studio - did you ever get any good wildlife shots?

but at the moment can't get out as working for feb opening...
cant wait to get out in the snow ....:naughty:
