I can't say i'm suprised that the screws of the world has sunk so low, but the real blame lies with people who buy this tripe - they wouldnt sell it if there wasnt a market for "shock" revelations.

I don't deserve any then as I stopped buying papers years ago when I got so disgusted and fed up with the "news" that was being printed. Perhaps everyone should do the same for a while - it is not as if we need to know that neighbours are falling out or minor "celebrity" did x,y or z with a, b and/or c

I completely agree. It really makes my teeth itch when I see the 'revelations' that are merely rumour and conjecture. About a subject that is about as newsworthy as my left big toe.

The state of the media in this country is really quite laughable to be honest. In fact it's a joke. The sad thing is, it's a business and if people didn't buy it they wouldn't make it.
Is it truly indicative of our nation being so stupidly thick that so many people buy these papers?
 
well i f i am working on sunday i am going to Hide all the Blinking NOTW and lie and say they didn't come in to customers.. ( if only i could do that )

Advertising pulled

Motor company Ford has announced a halt on advertising in the News of the World, pending the newspaper's investigation and response over the phone-hacking claims.

"Ford is a company which cares about the standards of behaviour of its own people and those it deals with externally," it said in a statement.

Energy company Npower and the Halifax bank have announced they are considering their options regarding advertising in the News of the World.
 
ITN News at 6:30pm said that Tesco were being pressured via Facebook and Twitter to cancel advertising, and that NI could lose £1million advertising sales per issue.

This is one of the things I despair about this country - we are fed crap by these rags and believe it - I don't buy and haven't bought 'newspapers' for years, neither do I read them, (which in itself is difficult :cuckoo:)

Let's hope they, and others, actually follow this through - together with enough 'readers' boycotting it may hurt NIs pockets enough for it to actually work - I somehow doubt it:shake:

For me, this is further proof that the current form of tabloid media is damanging, although coming from a paper owned by Rupert Murdoch I'm not surprised. News International are corrupt and inmoral, and its all coming out. BBC Newsnight seem to have confimed from the McCanns spokesperson and also Channel 4 have evidance of the NOW constantly watching a police detective...

As that classic quote goes "live by the sword, die by the sword" so it's ok for the hacker to hack into and delete messages on phones of people who are at their lowest point not knowing whether their children are still alive or dead, but not ok for his family to be mentioned.

I would like to see the full powers of the law come in on this one, do somebody decent for a change and let others know that should they try it, they will be dealt with harshly, bit of tar and feathers sounds good to me, these people are way down the food chain and don't deserve to breathe fresh air without having to pay for it.

Newspapers are already supposed to print retractions in the same prominence as the original article. Think it is one of their guidelines as they're 'self regulating'.

Whatever is done about this should still make sure all the expenses scandal and other scumbag nose in trough behaviour is still easily reportable.
 
While I total agree the paper and PI are in the wrong, as I said before what the hell are the phone company's doing about this, we have known for years this has been going on, why is it so simple to hack a voice mail account.

That is sort of like saying why don't shops make it harder to steal items though. Maybe they need to make it more secure, but I don't think they can be blamed for peoples abuse of it.

I don't know the technical ins and outs of how voicemail hacking is done, but on the radio this morning it said that if the hacker has mobile numbers there is a high chance that many of the owners of these numbers continue to use the default code that came with their phone - either 0000 or 1234. That being so a hacker will get "lucky" quite often.
Probably more to it than that, but best change the code from time to time.
 
true - and don't use 3142 - the first four numbers of pi are the most commonly used 'clever' code fr alarms and security etc (ditto obvious dates like 1066, 1966 etc)

also dont use your birthday etc as these are easily found out.

a good one to pick is your cash card pin - as its a four digit number that no one else knows that you are likely to remember

Am i alone in thinking it would be funny if someone hacked Rebekah brooks' cell phone and published her voice mails on tinterweb :lol:
 
My view in these kinds of things is that people always tend to look at the problem the wrong way. In this particular situation, the issue seem to be what "NoW" has done and what we should do about it. It is horrible what they have done to the poor family but i cant help but think about what we dont know about.

To me, it is not just "NOW" that is at fault here.

- The people buying the newspapers are partially to blame.
- The police must have known about it. Notice how information about the victims had to be forced out of them. They keep changing their story evertime something new comes out.

I also dont believe that whatever is happening now is happening because people have the best interest of the victims. There is a lot of politics involved with government officials and the Murdoch Empire.

My view is that this kind of thing happens all the time and will continue even with other tabloid/newspapers.

The sad thing about it is that all that will happen is that people will cry foul, a number of low grade employees will be punished for it the victim will probably get compensated in the form of money which usually does wonders and that will be the end of the story.

Those that dont get caught will continue doing the same thing using other means. The culprit here really is the person buying the newspapers. Human beings love gossips and as long as there is demand for it newspapers will get the gossips for them. There will be some hiccups along the way like the one "NOW" is having now but it will all wash away and it will be back to business as usual.

The above is true for all sorts of scandals, Wars, Government scandals, MP expenses etc. Its just how life is.

There was a graduate from uni on local radio today, saying he would do it if it was for the "Greater good" so they are taught this stuff in uni as he was on about his dissertation and mentioning it in that.

In our thirst for news and celeb gossip people have had to stoop lower and lower to deliver "news"

The only question is how is it so bad now, yet when it was just celebs it wasn't

or when the mp expenses scandal broke under from what I understand similar circumstances.

We either are against it full stop, in any circumstance, or we need to be totally against it. This middle ground area has lead us to what has happened.
 
Newspapers, like many other publications, are fighting a battle against the internet. As such, some of them are resorting to some pretty disgraceful behaviour to keep afloat.That is not new, it has been going on for years.

I loathe papers like the NOTW,the Mail and other gutter press, well, I use to, but it has been so long since I bought or read a "newspaper" of that ilk that I kinda forgot what a set of scumbags they are.

I guess I have just been reminded.

I think there is a difference between celebs/footballers who love the limelight and earn their living from the public, the politicians who make laws then break them, and the victims of terrible crimes who have done nothong wrong yet are being exploited by another set of criminals (the hackers) for the sake of a few quid.

The loss of advertising will hurt the NoTW most. I for one applaud the stance taken by Ford and the others that have cancelled advertising and shall be spending half an hour or so emailing other advertisers to encourage them to withdraw theirs.

It was interesting to hear the Mitsubishi UK executive on R4's World at One put a little positive spin on their stance against advertising with the NoTW.
 
Interesting to note that Sky News were covering the unfolding events in great detail today, one would almost think they were revelling in the impending doom of Ms Brooks, odd considering they are part of the same organisation.

A cynic might think that there are some internal politics involved in outing the culprits....
 
I agree it wont be long before some of the other papers start being hit with the same poo.
Will the NOTW sufffer? short term, yes, long term no. Peoples nosey attitude means they will continue to want to know who's shagging who, and always will.
I find it hypocritical though they don't care how sex and scandal information is obtained, but they leap on the outrage bus when something other than that is obtained the same way.
As for press freedom? Please! Press freedom involves a responsible press, not one that print fiction knowing they cannot and will not ever be held to account, because they can and will always claim press freedom.
If, and I doubt it will, a new press emerges from this, one which will tell the truth, without a bias towards the owners pet point of view or political thoughts then great.
As I say, it wont, some minor official in NI will do time for it, a huge amount of money will be wasted and people might finally think to change their voice mail pin away from 1234 or whatever the manufacturer default is.
 
What I can't understand about this is........ What did they really hope to get from the messages? and what did they think they could have done with the info? ....

No-one knows, that's the whole point. It's not about publishing the contents of the messages, it's about getting access to tips or clues that can lead to other things, or other people with things they can publish....

It would obviously depend on the messages intercepted but I imagine they were looking for stuff like "Missing Millie's secret boyfreind shock" or "family row minuites before she left the house" or crap like that (bear in mind that they didnt know she was dead at the time, so they might even have hoped to intercept something that led to her whereabouts " Missing Millie found..NOTW exclusive - more on pages 2,3,5 and 6")

Sadly the embarrassing and damaging story that seems to be blowing up is about corrupt police officers.

It's truly not a personal go at you mate, and I'm sure you'll take it in the right spirit but there's a tiny irony in you mentioning press embarrassment under your user name; it's akin to News International's release yesterday morning which seemed to want to finger Andy Coulson and the David Cameron connection immediately before Prime Minister's Questions in the hope of diverting attention from themselves.

Then again I whooped when I heard Chris Huhne interviewed on the Today programme this morning and he was asked what sort of an enquiry he wanted into the News of the World. What he DIDN'T say was "any one that diverts attention from the press having uncovered evidence that I ALLEGEDLY perverted the course of justice!!"

I don't quite agree. Press freedom has nothing to do with the press and what they do publish but everything to do with freedom FROM regulation by other people who would want to conceal things that might be published.
