Hi my name is Jess
I'm completely new to all of this i'm doing a course in January but have already purchased my beginners camera which is the Canon EOS 200D i have 2 lens the Tamron AF 70-300mm and the Canon EFS18-55mm.
I literally have no clue what i'm doing, i've just read the manual and watched a few youtube clips lol
I've started shooting with my camera already to get me use to it before i go to college any tips would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of Photography.

This book though now a little bit old since the last edition is still considered a good grounding.

PS are you able to say which course you have signed up for???

Thank you i will have a look at it, any help is much appreciated.
I will post some pictures soon but they will be RAW format as that's what i'm starting with not sure if that's the right thing to do lol.
I haven't got any editing software yet as i use Photoshop but its an old one i was thinking about using Lightroom but any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks George really looking forward to starting my new journey.

Welcome Jess.

This is the right place to start. Let the camera do its stuff in auto to begin with, concenbtrate on 'seeing' pictures and then capturing them. After a while you'll start to want to over-ride what the camera does, and that's the time to begin dabbling with the controls.

The other thing that will help is software to process the pictures after you've taken them. IIRC Canon provide their own software & that's going to be a good place to start.

Hi Jess, welcome to the forum.

A couple of thoughts, I’d also recommend “understanding exposure” as this is the key technical aspect. For the creative side take a look at “the photographers eye”.

You will probably find RAW pictures disappointing. This is because they do need processing, there are many options Lightroom, capture one, luminar, affinity - maybe ask what your course recommends and go with that. In the meantime I suggest choosing one of the jpgs in your camera, most likely they will look much better than raw.

Good luck!

Hi

Jess

It depends what pictures you are taking. In general for night pictures a tripod helps a lot. It means you can keep the shutter open for longer to collect enough light and keep the image sharp (apart from any movement in the scene.) If you’re taking pictures of people at night then flash helps - expose your image for the light in the scene and add some flash to light up the faces of the people.

welcome to TP Jess- I photograph mostly wildlife, that said all images have one thing in common- EXPOSURE get that right the rest will follow

I suggest you read up on the magic triangle of ISO - Shutter Speed -Aperture, all can be used to get that perfect exposure

have a look at my Flickr account ( below) and get a feel for what can be achieved with patience practice and a little knowledge

Les :)
